Easy & scenic slopes in Salzkammergut (AT)

Hello everyone,

I'll be spending a week this December in the Salzkammergut region of Austria, and I'll probably spend 3 or 4 of those days skiing. My level is beginner/lower-intermediate and I enjoy mostly long&scenic blue slopes, with some occasional reds.

I was wondering whether people who know the region can give me a recommendation as to where it'd be best to spend the little time I'll have. I enjoy the skiing but for me admiring the mountains (and lakes, if any) is the best part.

From what I can see, the Dachstein resort has the greatest number of km of pistes, but only few of them are blue.

Also, as I'll be on a relatively tight budget; can I save money by buying a pass just for one resort, or are passes good for all resorts in the region anyway?

Many thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Welcome to Epicski.

I spent a week skiing several areas around Salzburg some years ago, but they (Flachau, Zell am See, Bad Gastein, Saalbach, Zauchensee) were a few miles south of the Salzkammergut and I don’t know that exact area, but Dachstein West sounds good.  I feel there would be enough variety to entertain a novice/intermediate like yourself (12 chairlifts, 8 cable cars in Dachstein West alone).  The Dachstein Massif is close to 10,000’ elevation and is a very scenic mountain range.   That part of Austria is known for gentle slopes and moderate prices.  Check this website for more details.  Surely visits to one or two of the ski areas addressed in the link directly below could satisfy your requirements of 3-4 days of skiing.

Here is a recent thread here about nearby Flachau, which is part of the Ski Amade circus. http://www.epicski.com/t/114554/flachau

Finally, you might want to ask your question on snowheads.com , a UK website with many informed ski enthusiasts including some who may more frequently visit that area than the Americans here. http://snowheads.com/
