Ski camps for teenagers?

I am 18 from Australia and I love skiing. I grew up for a few years in Japan. There are mountains here too, Mt Hotham for example, which I love. I want to do a ski trip however most of my friends don't ski, and I would never be able to convince them, what with the costs, and everything. I was wondering it there's a place overseas, perhaps in Japan, where teenagers my age and around my age meet and ski together, make friends, and generally have an awesome time skiing? I really want to do a ski trip, but I don't want to ski on my own haha. I'd rather be with people. Are there any places anyone knows of? Thanks!

Canada has lots of these programs - google "gap year ski":

  • Section 8
  • All Tracks
  • Yes
  • Base Camp
  • International Academy

You will also potentially get certified as an instructor by the end.  These programs will develop your skiing skills big time, and they are tons of fun.

Tim, ski.com.au is a good place to ask as well.

There's Canadian Interschools run by two Aussies from Melbourne, tel 1300 794972. There's TJ Balon's trips c/- ski and board surrey in surrey hills melbourne, which iiirc goes to Hakuba and there's group trips through liquidsnowtours.

As a Hothamite, season Pass holders get reciprocal benefits in some places in Japan. whole list here

Niseko, Japan
2013 Hero Pass holders are entitled to the following:

  • One day (8 hour) all-mountain pass – redeemable 1 March 2013 – end season 2013 (pre-arrangement necessary through Niseko Powder Connection on +81136 215020 or bookings@nisekomanagement.com)
  • March special – buy 4, stay 7 nights in select properties*
  • Kids 6 years and under get free lift passes at Niseko all season
  • 15% discount off ‘Demo’ rental equipment and ‘Fusion’ retail (show of pass required)
  • Free zipling ride at Hanazono, valid all season

*Select properties include:

  • Niseko Landmark View
  • Gondola Chalets
  • Mountainside Palace
  • Forest Estate
  • Hana and Jo
  • Kizuna

you could join a ski club like Aust Alpine Club that has lodges in Niseko Japan, Falls, Hotham, Buller, Thredbo and Perisher iirc etc. The Ski Club of Victoria at Buller is starting up trips with their race sponsors Big White & Silverstar in 12/13 and Hakuba is in the pipeline for 2013/14. Other clubs might have similar group travel too. FB friends of Ski-in Victoria get 5% off Travelplan's o/s holidays.

if you're starting  uni, speak to the uni ski club members. Swinburne iirc is affiliated with usc.com.au, Melbourne Uni is MUSKI Lodge at Buller, and Monash has a club (but no lodge): check their facebook pages.

Keep an eye on Jetstar sales to Japan.

Whistler is a favourite with Aussies

Squaw/Alpine in northen California offered US College pass deals to Australian tertiary students.

There are race club camps run by instructors from Buller, for example, that operate from Winter Park in the northern winter.

The world is your oyster.
