new ski bases

Thread Starter

I just received my new skis I ordered online and the bases are pretty bad.  One of them has a ~1 inch long gouge and both are scratched near where the bindings would be mounted.  Is this normal? Can't decide if its worth it to return them, especially if the next ones won't be any better.

Thanks

Not normal but if you could post a few pictures it would be nice.  Your new skis should have arrived factory wrapped in plastic, scratch and gouge free.

If I were you I would take pictures of them and call the shop where purchased.  See what they are willing to do.

They were new in plastic, which is why I'm wondering if my expectations were just too high.  The store seems to have a good return policy, I'm just wondering if its worth the hassle.

Thanks for your input.  Here are a few pics.

*2.  these are pretty normal markings from transport, even when they are wrapped in plastic.

Yes. Yes, they were.

When I ordered new skis, they arrived in a box with padding all around.  Not a nick to be seen.  I paid good money for them so I expected (reasonably) to receive a new product (which I did).  Your pics show the bases in what looks to me to be used condition.  Any good, reputable store will replace them.

They look pretty normal to me... especially for an online store/ship home situation.

Replace those???? ..............no way............... that's WNL........ within normal limits and brand new............. your scratches are highly superficial.............. you'll get more scratches than that placing them in your vehicle or on your ski rack, and definitely skiing to and getting on the chair.......Gouges are another issue and those  are not gouges....... like waxman said........... Mount em and ski em..............and have fun! :)

I am fussier than most here. I would be annoyed if my new skis arrived with those nicks and I, personally, would  let the store know I was annoyed. That being said, it does not look like the damage was serious or permanent. I hate it when I put a gouge in my skis, and I especially hate it when someone else does.

Those are fine, I would not even consider returning them unless they are racing skis which they do not appear to be (and you are racing at a high enough level for true base uniformity to matter). I ordered some Blizzard Cochise online (which have a reputation for high build quality) and they have a few scratches like the ones in your second pic, there is zero chance of feeling those on snow.

Return them for 'brand new, unscratched, unused skis'.

Then the first day, after the first run, on your 'brand new unscratched unused skis' look at the bases.

I usually don't 'LOL', but I will here.

Totally normal looking.  Binding systems and plates scratch the ski in front of them when stored on store racks.  Good luck finding any ski without these tiny imperfections.
