What length ski should I get?

Hi everybody

I currently ski on atomic r:10 's that where given to me. they are 150cm (i think. I can't find the # on the ski). They are a bit short for me but were free. I'm about to buy a pair of Atomic Smoke TI and would like suggestions for length. I'm 5'6" 160 lbs Intermediate to advanced skier in my 40's who occaisionally races NASTAR. What should I get...164? or 157?

Thanks very much,

JL

164 if not 171.

Hi Ghost

Thanks for the reply.  So in your opinion definitely go longer than 157.  (it's been a long time since I bought skiis).

A 150 would typically be a length for a lightweight female. IF your present ski is a 150 then I'd think the 164 would be a large enough step to make at one time. Our recommendations are based on your present ski length. If that is not right then the advice isn't right. I think almost every ski is marked. If you can't find the mark then use a tape measure and see what they measure both overall tip to tail and running length.

If you prefer speed, racing-type turns and versatility and stability in all conditions, go with the 164. If you prefer short turns, moguls, and hard pack, go with the 157. I've found that, when comparing 2 neighboring sizes, the longer length will give you tons more stability and versatility at higher speeds and in crappier snow, while giving up very little in the way of quickness. JMHO, of course. (I'm not familiar with the Smoke, but if it's rockered at all, go even longer!)

Thanks everybody.

I forgot to mention that I'm a Male.  The TI's i might get are last year's model.

157 is just too short for 160 lbs.  164 would be a good hard pack sl radius turn ski.  178 your gs length and 171 a compromise, leaning towards gs.

Welcome to EpicSki.  The Smoke Ti is a tip rocker ski so it will ski shorter than it's stated length.  I'm 5'7" and my daily driver is a 170cm Nordica Steadfast, also an early rise/tip rocker ski.  I recommend you get the 171, but certainly no shorter than the 164.  If you're really an intermediate to advanced skier you should no trouble with the 171.

Great.  Thanks Ghost.  And thanks everybody else too.  I think I'll go for the 164's.

Thanks MTcyclist.  I will still race a bit, but I guess I'm mostly skiing all around these days so I may go 164 so it's not too big of a jump from the 150s.

If I was racing more I'd go for the 171.  Appreciate the info.
