The above is hard for me to assess personally with just 16 days at the Aspen areas and 13 at Vail. I have not had a big powder day at Vail, and I had huge powder during my first week at Aspen in 1980 when my skills were not at a level to appreciate it for more than a couple of hours per day before retreating to the groomed.
My experience is that skiers do not distribute themselves evenly over large mountains like Vail. Outlying areas, and especially ungroomed outlying areas, are unlikely to see enough traffic to degrade the snow IMHO.
However I will agree that Vail has liftlines, sometimes fairly long ones, while liftlines are rare at any of the Aspen areas.
