In light of the fact that LA County schools are out for 3 weeks starting December 17th, and we absolutely need the non-holiday lodging and lift ticket rates to afford a trip, we are in the process of planning a trip to Tahoe (OR Mammoth) for that week.
We will be skiing at the resorts we can get the military discounts, so Alpine, Squaw, and Mt Rose. (Keeping it to the north end of the lake because we like it better up there.) We would love to do Northstar but their rates are so heinous this year, (including for kids' ski lessons) that unless we find a way to get much better prices there, we won't be skiing there.
We plan to stay in Reno because of the lower altitude. Our daughter is on a diuretic for her heart and while we have clearance to take her skiing, I would feel better about sleeping at 4400 vs. 6500+ feet. (Which is also why we probably won't do Mammoth, which is our "home" mountain.)
So, questions: How are the resorts faring as far as snow so far? I know there are a bunch of storms heading that way this weekend. Think it'll be enough to open Alpine with good coverage? Hubby will ski anything, but I prefer the groomers anyway unless conditions are prime, then I'll venture off for a bit.
Where is a good place to stay in Reno (we are looking at the casinos downtown for inexpensive eats and sleeps, but I hate crappy hotels and smoke, so am a little leary.)
Any deals at Northstar, like the two-for-one they've run at Shell stations in the past? I'd hate to miss skiing Northstar while we are there. But the current price for the three of us to ski there for one day is $363. No bueno. We can do Mt. Rose for $154/day.
Any feedback would be great!
