Okay, I'll bite. We don't highly regulate the conversations on Epicski, and the tone seems overall pretty welcoming to me. We have exceptions and some words are outright misogynistic by just a few members. I can only suggest that they be called out and told that it's unacceptable. The moderation team can help. Report the post, or send a PM to the offending member and explain why it's a problem. In most cases, that's all it takes to point out they only embarrassed themselves. It's amazing how few problems we actually have considering we don't even use an automatic word filter, but instead rely on the personal filter in each of the member's minds. Most of us treat each other like we have met, or will meet in person. That said, I'd like to see a lot less of the D-bag word used here.
Secondly, since Trekchick became an editor and content manager, the moderation team does not have adequate representation for women on this site. If you are interested in being part of the solution for that problem, send me a PM letting me know of your interest. You can participate in direct moderation of the site, including debating the fine line between censorship and redirection, and help us make changes in attitudes that ultimately define the cultural behavior here. Like any "community", we have a lot of diversity, and a few characters. Taking that away is not our objective. Cultivating civility within that diversity is about the best we can hope for, and I think we get pretty close. Again, let me know if you want a piece of that action.
I agree with some comments above that members (especially new ones) often don't know the gender of the member we are talking to in a thread. New members sometimes blow in and post in a way that doesn't really fit in. Usually the members suggest they reconsider, sometimes moderators do it. For as large and active as Epicski has become, it's amazing how little we are called on to intervene.
Remember the red flag at the end of every post. It's there to help us help you. Don't be afraid to use it, because it's become impossible to read this site end-to-end. We need your help.
