Opening Weekend at Schweitzer

Schweitzer opened yesterday with VERY limited terrain, as in just the main groomer off Basin Express and the Bunny Hill.

While they only classified the one main groomer as "Open," you could ski anything you could get to at your own risk...or at your skis' own risk.

Anyway, the groomer was nice and not too crowded, but I usually cut over to one of the unopened runs.  Anywhere off the main groomer (Midway) was brushy and quite, quite firm by the time I got there.  Pic is bottom of Ridge...the open groomer can be seen coming in from behind the trees at center/right-bottom of pic.

But hey, it's still skiing!

Does Schweitzer have any snow making? Have they done much summer grooming or do they need to wait for stumps to be covered?

They have snow-making but not a lot; I've only seen a couple guns.  I suspect that's why only the Bunny Hill and the one main groomer are open and in pretty nice condition.  It's certainly cold enough for expanded snow-making if they had the capability for it.

I don't know about summer grooming, but the lower mountain cut runs appear to be pretty devoid of stumps, rocks, and logs.  I didn't see signs of those anyway, and as the picture indicates, plenty of people were chancing it.  From where I sit, I think uneven ground and thick brush are the main issues.

Ironically, the only place I scraped bare earth was on the prepared groomer.  It still beats watching TV, though!

Yeah, Schweitzer really only works on Midway and Happy Trails for snowmaking and summer grooming. They mow the Midway run every fall and I believe they have enough guns to cover all of Midway in the event there's no/little snow but cold temps.

Good job getting up there. I was thinking about it, but then checked the webcam and the lines for Midway. Didn't seem worth it for the limited terrain. Hopefully they open the triple and/or quad this coming weekend.

You didn't miss much at 49 or Lookout's opening days. Although, I did ski 10 inches of powder for most the morning at Lookout, all 400 vertical feet of it.

49 on Friday:

Wow, you got around!

I didn't go up until about Noon both days, so the lines were much shorter by then...3-4 minutes max.

I wouldn't count on the quad or the triple this weekend, as the forecast looks dreary...little snow through the week and probable rain for the weekend.  mad.gif

Ugggh.  Gonna be pretty warm up there over the weekend.  I'm holding out for now.
