MID-ATLANTIC GATHERING, BLUE KNOB, PA FEB 22-24, 2013 - Page 2

Ok, two questions here:

1)- does anyone have a recomendation for lodging in the area?  Most hotels seem to be 1/2 hour to 45 minutes away.

2)- any space in the house being rented for a single guy?  (not sure if the wife is going just yet...)

Check out the EpicSki Blue Knob Resort Guide. Scroll down to Resort Deal. BK has a $69 per person, per night lift and lodging package for their condos. They are not ski in/out but a free shuttle is provided.

We do have a slopeside house reserved but Jamesj, our BK Gathermeister, is currently in Tahoe. He will be the one to ask about space.

Here is a link to local lodging from BK's web site.

It might be worth looking into getting another group together for a second house.

I look forward to skiing with you.

Has MikeC chimed in yet? I know my wife will be there for at least a day...maybe my daughter too.  Whatever happened to Hot Chocolate? As you can tell, I'm all for a co-ed event.

Right now the weather is bleak but winter is expected to arrive...on the first day of winter. Let's hope the season begins in earnest.

So, I'll be there for at least one day. We have some possible President's Day plans that will influence how available I can be the weekend of the BK Gathering. If those turn out to be a no-go, I'll likely try to make it for the entire weekend. I'll get that nailed down as soon as I can so that I can start making arrangements.

I'll bug MikeC to see what his plans are as well.

Thanks LHC. I'll check out that info.  Conditions are looking excellent so far, let's hope the fresh snow keeps coming

Yes, I know President's Day is the previous weekend. However, DH and I are looking into going to California for President's Day. If we DO, then some family events might be moved to the weekend of the Mid-Atlantic Gathering, which means I can't be there all weekend. See how that snowballs? So, we shall see . . .

Chance and I am officially "in".  Barring any major catastrophes we will be there Friday night, probably late since he has school that day.  See you there!

Ya Charles is a great guy, but you are also going to have to put up with me.

This is really shaping up, looks like Gathermeister has rounded up almost all the usual suspects.

Last year I didn't actually ski with anybody but my son.  I did put him in a one hour private and skied solo during that time, but never connected with any of the other folks during that hour.  The rest of the time the group just left us in the dust as we clicked in and skied the greens.  I have low expectations of spending much on the slope time with other Bears while I'm with the kid.  He's still strictly a green skier.  But, I have greater optimism with the house being much closer to the green trail, bringing 2-way radios, and being more familiar with Blue Knob in general.  I would expect that I can wear him out in a couple hours and set him up back at the house with a video game while anyone else is there since we know almost everyone pretty well.  Then I can grab a few laps with the other Bears out on the mountain, and ski while he's in lessons if I end up setting something up.  If he wants to head back out from the house or folks there want to split he can call me on the 2-way and I'll come back to the house for him.

Lots more options this time.

Any other youngsters going, Liam, Zoe?.... besides Old Boot that is?duck.gif

Trying to set up the lodging deal.  Looks lie 68 is kinda not real?  Any suggestions or shares for my daughter and I?

New to PA.

From what jamesj told me, the house is pretty well spoken for, pending confirmations from some previous attendees.  If there are enough others interested, maybe we could put together something for another rental unit?

Hi Cirquerider, Well the Hilton is a Hampton in Bedford. We stayed in a motel in Bedford for the first BK Gathering it's not a bad drive but maybe like NJ164 says yinz can get another house together. I do miss going to the World Famous Ed's Steakhouse in Bedford for dinner though.

Sounds like you just vollunteered to organize a 2nd house or condo.  I would be willing committ if you organize one.

We stayed in Bedford our first trip there.  Took about 45 minutes to reach the lodge from there.  I heard a rumor that there is a fairly large USSA type race there that weekend.  Better move fast if you're trying to book something else.

This looks like a possibility for those still in need of a roof

Cirque, NJskier, Rick, et al,

I defer to you guys about banding together to get a second group rental property for the weekend of Feb 22-24.  I may be able to steer others to your effort, e.g. MarzNC.  Here are some leads I can provide.  For info on the resort owned condos which are about 1 mile from the slopes see here:

http://www.blueknob.com/index.php/lodging/mountain-lodging

I have stayed in these units, they are not too fancy, but utilitarian.  They are not too big.  There is a pool/hot tub facility adjacent to them, which you get access to.  Also, the resort runs a shuttle bus from these condos to the summit of the mtn connecting to ski lifts and lodge.  Looks like the one or two bedroom units both sleep 6, but the one bedrooms have a double bed and two bunk beds and one sleep sofa while the two bedrooms have two double beds and one sleep sofa.  So the one bedrooms might actually be better for group arrangements and would be $420 total for two nights, not bad if split 4, 5, or 6 ways.  Fish around on Blue Knob website for any better ski and stay deals.  These condos are not as convenient as slopeside, but in the event of fresh snow better than staying 20 miles away at nearest motels near Bedford, PA.  Blue Knob is an upside down ski area.  Base lodge facilities are at the 3000' summit and last few miles of access road can be challenging in snowy weather.

Here is a list of non-resort properties including more expensive slopeside houses and Bedford motels.

http://www.blueknob.com/index.php/lodging/local-lodging

Note there are more chain motels down near Bedford.  One I have used that is not on list is the Quality Inn.  I think the Hoss's buffets on list are good, cheap places to eat in Bedford, also Ed's Steakhouse (more expensive).  I haven't stayed at Judy's Motel, but it has a good reputation as a mom&pop motel.

Also, I will stay in touch if anything opens in current house.

Jamesj, what is the name of the house that you currently have rented?  If there is enough interest for a second lodging, I think slopeside would be preferable.

It's called Mountaintop Chalet, the fourth property on the list in the second link in post #51 above.  The property called Ski the Knob Chalet on same list appears to be nearby and might be worth looking into?  It has two units, but I couldn't find availability info about them on its website.

Meals are potluck and shared among the group. We do a little bit of last minute coordination on who brings what sort of stuff, breakfast/lunch/dinner.  Very informal.  Lots of liquid carbs.  We usually have tons of extras to share with daytrippers/friends stopping by for lunch and après ski.

Thanks James.  OK, I'll take on looking into a second house or condo if the Mountaintop Chalet is indeed ful up and there is enough interest.

So, anyone who is NOT already booked into the current house and would like to look into sharing a house, please post here or PM me.  FYI: I will be on a business trip the first week of February that I am extending into the next week to do a few days at Tahoe, so I need to have something in place within the next 2 weeks.

James, let me know as soon as you can about any availability at the Mountaintop Chalet.  Even if I manage to get a bed there I'll still do the legwork on a second place for anyone interested.

Me and my big mouth...LMAO

OK, that's two

Unless some bunks open up at house #1

I'm liking the potential record turnout here requiring TWO houses!  People that were settling for a sleeping bag on the floor of house A will probably trade up to a couch or bed in house B.  I think the novelty of Cirque showing up as a yinzer is spiking demand at this eventbeercheer.gif

Oh, I think it will be a while until I can be considered a full-blooded "yinzer"

I think they're hoping to meet Dsloan.

Hey, I am 100% Yinzer!  I am a product of the Pittsburgh Public Schools having attended the same HS (Peabody) as my Father before me. Not surprisingly I bleed Black & Gold.   Not that there is anything wrong with that!

Unfortunately I now live in the Land of the Browns (Cleveland) and there just might be something wrong with that!  LOL

Looking forward to meeting some of you in the flesh.
