Old school boots... Salomon Force 9's.... any info?

I'm putting together a retro setup (don't judge) just for fun a couple of days this season. I'm not looking for high performance or anything like that. We're talking 190 skis and rear entry boots. Bright colors, all that.

So with that in mind, can anyone tell me anything about the Salomon Force 9 boots? Found a like-new pair that are quite glorious in appearance. I'm not looking to push the envelope in these things, just to rock it out in style once or twice a season. What were the boots designed for back in nineteen eighty-whenever? All-mountain? Beginners? Intermediates? Any thoughts on things like flex?

One final note: this is not my primary setup. I know that there are inherent problems with using old gear. With that in mind, what do you all think?

I remember buying my pair in 1992 back when I was monoskiing a Rossingnol Extreme which later snapped.  From what I remember they were a very good boot yellow, black and blue that were designed for the so called extreme skiing back in the day. Sad to say but I also had the Force 9 skis and a pair of salomon S9000s 212 in length.

As far as performance I was dropping cliffs in them, even the waterfall at Whistler.  I was eighteen. I don't remember the flex but if you can find any Warren Miller movie from that era you should find some skiers wearing a pair. Hope you are not making fun of my glory days. Good luck and you need a matching Sun Ice one piece!

I have some SX92R's that I ski from time to time for Retro days. They still ski pretty well with straight skis. Go for it.

Those are fabulous boots. Even better than the Sx91. I still ski mine, and have a spare pair in storage.
Easy to adjust on the fly -- take a look at my profile picture. Love the flex stiffness adjustment too.

They are the first generation ski boots made by Salomon. They helped pass along a myth,,,,that rear entry boots were to "future" in ski boots.

Keep them since they are "museum" pieces that any ski collector would love to have.

Oh,,if you do decide to ski on them get some soft shin foam or soccer type shin guards since you will have very red "rare" shins at end of day !

They are actually the third generation of boots from Salomon, there was the SX90, SX91 then the SX92 and the Force was a color variation off of that boot.

  • had a pair of those in the 90's. For the time they were good boots, if they fit. Flex is funny; if the tongue works for you, great. If not, just put them up on the wall...

The Force 9's were designed for kicking ass! Extreme skiing boots with one buckle for quick attacks. for most of the past 20 years they have also been the best ski touring boot available for comfort and warmth. first boot to use a power strap too i believe.
you should rock them all the time, they definitely put you in the back seat a bit but there is nothing you can't ski in these boots if you know what you're doing and don't mind looking awesome.
i ski them everyday in Whistler - on hill, backcountry, steep, deep, cat, heli, sled, tour, everywhere. best boot ever if you ask me.

Still wearing my force 9's bought nearly twenty five years ago. Fit great and very warm, minus 22c in Sutton  last week no problem. Dread the day one of the cables breaks. Liners are getting real thin.  Got my money out of these suckers. Cost large back in the day. How come top of the line yesterday are considered crap today? Marketing my friend, are we all sheep? Must have the latest and greatest? Just ski!!!! as Warren once said, " if not this season, you'll be one year older next season" if your real lucky!
