Whistler Blackcomb open and the skiing is very good

Blackcomb opened today - the snow is excellent, light pow over a good base (on what is open), remember is is November not March so please don't post about how much is not open.

Thanksgiving weekend coming up - not sure what the crowds are going to be like but conditions are excellent on both mountains with a good weather system (for snow) on its way.

Friday is looking to be a powder morning so I hope everyone enjoys.

And Friday was a powder morning! 10+" new. Very nice conditions indeed and I think, lots open--13 lifts/gondolas and...I don't know how many runs, but plenty for November.

glad to hear it has turned out ok for you but I'll still will wait until next week - should be able to ski to the valley then.

What is open?  The real story.

How is the coverage?  Regular or rock skis?

go to the site and look at the cams - nice sunrise earlier  - should be another decent day

(actually you could call it great but only if you factor in that it's still the 3rd week in November)

In reality there are a limited number of runs open but patrol were doing nothing to stop people hiking to the Peak today.

The coverage is fantastic on the groomed. open runs. Coverage from the bottom of Emerald to mid-station via Olympic was fine, very few hard patches and only the occasional twig. Certainly no concern for ski damage above Emerald.

If one is off piste (re out of bounds) then you take your own risks.

Not too crowded despite being a Sunday - a beautiful sunny cold winter day which allowed the snow guns to run all day.

Enjoy.

Coverage is very good for November  but rock skis would still be recommended if not skiing the groomed. I hit numerous rocks and lumber on both mountains this weekend. Edge damage off the old blue chair fall line down chuckys choice and again in pig alley at whistler, minor rock damage off fragglerock at crystal ridge on blackcomb. Also, if you are not concerned about your skis you can now ski to the valley. Again the groomed runs have very good coverage but outside that it is still early in the season with early season conditions.

You only need rock skis if you're determined to go on closed runs. There were 28 groomers open and more (didn't count how many) ungroomed and legitimately open. As already said, lots of folks were ducking ropes; I cringed watching some people (from lifts) heading toward rocks. It's only November! I don't mind being patient and saving my skis.

I did not have to duck any rope or go by any temporary boundary marker to access the above listed runs. Rock skis are recommended as it is early season for anything other then the groomed runs. That is of my opinion and my recommedations after 5 days skiing this week.

Had a great time skiing today. CBC trees were fantastic at the top, but the bottom was much less coverage. Lots of exposed logs, roots, and rocks currently. Hiked up into the Sudan Couloir for some fresh tracks and was not disappointed smile.gif. Saw a decent amount of tracks up in the glacier chair area. Does anybody know which route people were taking to AT up there? Has anyone ventured up into blackcomb/spearhead glacier?

Checked out the forecast for next weekend. Its sounds like friday will be a good pow day!

50cm in past 24 hrs. Amazing EARLY season conditions. Got pretty enthusiastic in the trees but there are lots of unburied/ half buried logs & branches. Multiple pillow lines & face shots if you know your lines.

Ski off the groomed with caution & please heed advisory signs thy are there for your safety.
Harmony opened late this morning & chairs are being hung on the Peak Chair. Very exciting.
More snow on the way.
