Ski Tracker for iPhone FREE today

Thread Starter

Hey everyone I just thought I'd let you know my just released Ski Tracker app is free today(11/21) only. I'd love to get any feedback you can give me on it if you give it a shot. Just trying to get it out there in the hands of as many people as possible and hopefully get some good reviews on the store. No ads or anything as it's a paid app and will go back to being paid tomorrow.

Ski Tracker: GPS Tracking for Skiers

Nice of you to offer it free for the day. icon14.gif

I downloaded the app and poked around a bit, but will not be able to give any real useful feedback until I use it.  I will be sure to provide my feedback after I have a chance to spend a few days on snow with it.

Thanks for giving it a shot. Let me know when you get a chance to actually use it what you think.

Thanks, I just downloaded it. Won't be on snow for a week or two though.

I sure will.

The app looks great with a nice interface.  Looks like it will be very easy to use for recording the session and reviewing the results.

BTW - The map seems to be quite accurate.  It is showing me in the SW corner of my house, which is where I am sitting at my computer as I type.

Hey Clarky, thanks for the info and freebie.  I've tried many tracker apps (free and paid), so I downloaded yours and took a look.  I haven't used it skiing yet, so I can't comment there directly, but I did check out the features, interface, etc and have the following questions/suggestions:

-I like the straightforward and clean interface.  There's no extraneous stuff, little visual clutter to confuse the user, easy to understand.  Nice graphics, easy to read, big font on the main display, buttons/tabs are big enough.  Well done.

-There aren't advanced graphing features or trail map tie-ins, but for anyone who wants a somewhat simple but effective tracking app this could be a strong contender I think.  Since I got it free for today, I can't comment on the value of it because I'm not sure how much it normally sells for? Ski Tracks (a top contender, in my opinion) sells for $2.99 I think, so if yours sells for $0.99 then I think it's certainly worth the price.  If it's $1.99 I'd say that's the limit.  Beyond that and you're competing against a few other apps that have much more advanced features that are integrated.  Just my opinion, though.

-When reviewing stats and map, and zoomed into my location......when I go back to the Home tab, then back to Map, the entire world is shown and zoomed out again.  Is there any way to "save" (or at least reload/remember) my last viewing point, rather than having to zoom in all over again?  To be honest, it'll be a pain to zoom in, out, back in again, over and over everytime I switch the tabs.  Can that be improved/changed?

-Facebook linking/posting is all fine and dandy but those of us who aren't so narcissistic, can you add the ability to just export a map through your Google Earth base as a .kmz file?  That way we could export and email for our own records, comparison, bragging rights, whatever.

-Can you add the ability to export the displayed stats as a .csv file, again to email and use in a spreadsheet to track our runs, etc? Same deal here as .kmz map file.

Hope that helps for feedback.  It's a great start, I like the look and ease of use.  A few export features would be excellent value added for it, and see about fixing that map zoom tweak, but other than that I think you've done a great job!

OH, almost forgot one question:  does the Vert Drop stat calculate drop for current run ONLY, or for total accumulated runs (ie-turn on the app, let it run 3 hours, and it calculates all my runs and vertical drop)??

And lastly........I like this one better than Ripxx wink.gif  Looks like you're a sci/math guy....GPS Determination paper, eh?  LOL.  Nice.  Good to see you got the visual interface done right, nice to see tech geeks who can do design as well (I mean that as a compliment, honestly).

it's generally 1.99, though I'll probably play with this a little bit going between .99 and 2.99. I have found that most of the time I sell more at the lower price, but not enough more (i.e. double) to make up for it. 1.99 is the likely pricing.

It shouldn't be showing the whole world, it generally does a "zoom to fit" of route that was saved. How long was the route you did?

As a note, you can turn off the popup for facebook in the settings. As for the export that is something I've considered. It really depends on how well the app does as to whether I would put in the time for something like that. It's definitely on my list of possibilities though.

same as above

sadly no. I've found that the altitude accuracy on gps (at least non-military level gps) isn't good enough to do accumulations on (I've spent a lot of time on this). In general it the altitudes are pretty close, but the combined error when summing every second ends up huge. On the other hand, if you just take one run and get the max and min altitude, it's really a pretty reasonable result. If you want the combined vert, you will sadly have to record a new track each run. Everything else will obviously be fine, speed, distance, time, etc.

Yeah it's actually not as good as some of my other apps with a different designer (IMO) but it is much better than my first design. I figured out a long time ago that I need to pay someone else to do the graphics after I design and code the app :-) Ripxx was quite a long time ago before I went on my own full time, and I don't think they even still have it available.

I downloaded your program. Thank you very much. I'll give it a try

Thanks. Hopefully I will be able give it a try this weekend. I'll give some feedback when I do.

Not quite my first post. Granted I haven't been active, but I have posted before, and have had an account for over 2 years.

Who gets mad at getting free stuff? That seems silly.

^^If it's free without having to enter a boatload of personal info, and it's ski related seems like it belongs here to me.  But, not everyone here agrees though.  If that had been some Android app I guarantee someone would have complained within an hour.

Yeah I can understand people not wanting to be constantly spammed by people advertising their stuff, but I also know from the other side of the coin that it's really hard. You want to let the people who would be interested in your stuff (app, whatever) know you exist, but it's going to look like spam unless you have 100's of posts, (and even then it still looks like spam it's just tolerated).

Does anyone have a suggestion for how to reach skiers with something like this, other just the search in the app store? I personally enjoy tracking my runs even though I don't ski a ton (live in the south). I wouldn't have made something like this if I didn't use it myself. I just don't know how to reach this market other than making posts like this on ski forums and organic search in the app store. If someone has an idea I'm all ears.

Say, I was using your app today and on the map there were three colors (blue, green, and red) on each run.  I couldn't find a legend, so can you explain what the colors signify?

Sure no problem. It's color coded by speed at that point with red being fastest, blue slowest, and green in the middle. It'll have shades of each in between. It lets you quickly see where you went the fastest quickly.

Cool, thanks!

I see an awful lot of blue on today's log, LOL...
