Alta for Thanksgiving - How to get there?

Hi everybody! Just bought last minute Thanksgiving packages for us to go to Alta! We leave tomorrow, and we're staying in Sandy. We also have a rental from the airport. But it most likely won't have snow tires and they won't allow chains either.

So how do we get up to Alta? I checked on the Utah Transit Authority website, and they are not running any buses until December 9. Any suggestions or ideas welcome. The weather appears to be clear for most of the week.

Thank you for your help.

If it's not snowing, you're fine with whatever car you have.

Thank you, Steve.

I guess I might consider buying chains from Wal-mart if I need to have something in the car to just show at the checkpoint, if needed. I also don't want to be stuck up on the mountain, unable to drive down in case it does snow.

There is not an official checkpoint. if it's snowing the police will often be there. But if no snow, typically not. Look at forecast.Based on what I see from forecast, nothng substantial for a while. maybe a little snow Sunday, but not too much. But if sking Sunday look at forecast night before to see if an issue.

I believe the requirment all winter is chains in car or snowtires, however they define snow tires as M/S which covers most all season tires, so I think your rental might be OK.

If the road does get bad, however, they may post for chains on or 4WD/AWD with snows, but doesn't sound like it will be that bad. If by chance that did happen, without the bus not running, best bet would probably be to go to Park City area that day.

Thank you for all the advice! I didn't realize there wasn't any checkpoint.

We are skiing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, so I think the forecast is looking sunny and good (or bad, depending on your point of view). I am just excited to be able to go skiing so early. Hopefully that 28" base isn't going to melt away in the next few days!

if it doesn't snow this week, you have nothing to worry about. I'm not sure if you know LCC, but it's not bad at all when dry.

Please let us know how the conditions were the past few days! Thanks.

How did the trip go?  When are you going back? wink.gif

Alta is my favorite in the SLC area.  We go during late season.
