Racing boots vs all mountain boots for aspiring junior racer ???????

Hi!

My son is going to race this year for a Vermont ski team. The races will be USSA and Vara. GS and SL. He currently skis on a pair of Nordica Hot rod 60 boots. 297mm 25,5 mondo. The boot from what I see is a typical Jr boot and for the 25.5 size is a 65 flex. Does he need a Jr race boot? What  are the benifit's to a race boot? Or save some$$$ and If the Hot Rod still fits use it since there isn't any real difference?

At his height  and weight what flex is correct?

My son also has a wide foot.  What boots would best suit him?

Would a Nordica Dobermann 70 or 80 work for him?  Or what other model?

My son is 12yrs old 125lbs and 5.1 ft

Thanks for your help with all of these  questions!!!!!!

first issue to address is his age and weight. these 2 points are the beginning of your strategy on boots.

time to move on. he is too old and too heavy for that nordica boot.

the terms race are just marketing.   buy a boot that fits him, that he can flex, and dont worry about the words on the shell, or the color of the boot.

or are you asking what boot will fit him?  that I have NO idea.  I have not seen his foot, or width, or strength, or ankle range of motion, or anything else.

hi

I would be looking for a boot in the 100 to 110 flex range if he is an average athlete and perhaps a 120 if he is gifted.  you can alway soften to suit but at that weight and age he is putting some serious load through the system.  what ski lengths?  150SL and 170-175 GS?  all companies in Racing have boots in this catagory - 4 buckle overlap, funtional flex, power/booster strap etc.  a lace up liner is nice for getting the boot on and off.  several brands also offer a " short cuff " version designed to be more suitable for a shorter tibial length.  For his height and if I had to guess, 25.5 seems like there is far more than a finger in the shell behind his heel as well. boot could be too big.

Bottom line - find a good boot fitter in your area - I would recommend PJ Dewey at Race Stock Sports in Waterbury he is one of the best in the world.

Thanks for your reply!!

My son has Volkl racetigers gs in 156cm and 163cm. His sl skis are Volkl in a 143cm. The coach suggested he put some time on the skis first then figure out the correct size. I checked the shell size and there is almost  3 fingers of width between the heel and shell wall. I think its time I get him to a good fitter! If I can get there Race Stock Sports sounds great.

Thanks
