Any thoughts on 2013/2014 get-togethers/gatherings?

I know some may think its too early to be planning for 2104; however, I book my vacations close to a year in advance. I am a timeshare owner and with that requires alot of preplanning farther out then normal.

So has anyone given any thought to the 2013/2014 season yet?

Usually the EpicSki Gathering location for the following year is voted on at the Gathering of this year.  We won't know when the 2014 GTG is until we are mid week at the 2013 GTG.

Ok, thanks for the info.

My experience with ski gatherings is that it's very hard to make use of timeshare trades.  Assuming you want to set up things well in advance instead of waiting until the 45-day "last minute" window.  Even though there is a Silver Crown timeshare in the Big Sky village, I opted to get a VRBO condo instead for my small group of friends going to the late March Gathering.  That way all the travel arrangements could be completed in the fall, well before most people are thinking about ski trips.

Why's that? Is it because it takes so long for everyone to decide when and where to go?

For me, I go to ski forum gatherings with adult friends, not family.  I'm the only true ski nut in the extended family.  wink.gif  Usually one or two of my ski buddies is interested in joining me for a gathering.  Of course, having more housemates decreases the cost per person per night and increases the fun.  So I need to know decide on lodging early enough to know how many other people to invite.  Hard for people to plan a year out, but possible in early fall.  If I have to wait until there is a match for a timeshare trade, then it's more likely to be too late to find housemates for a gathering.  For a one week ski trip, I much prefer a condo with a full kitchen than a motel room.

For a ski trip for which time and destination are flexible, putting in a timeshare search makes sense.  But that's not the situation for a group gathering.  I've enjoyed the gatherings I've attended enough to make it worth dealing with other lodging options.

FYI, I usually send in a deposit for a VRBO rental in Sept or Oct.  Always better to book a place well before mid-Nov if you want the best deal.

Oh, I just realized the difference. You are a RCI Weeks member. I'm a Points member. For me if a resort has availibility I can book it immediately, don't have to wait for a trade.

It's just me and my wife that skis. But we will always book a 2 bedroom if it is available. If we can't find anyone to join us, my wife will sleep in the other bedroom so she doesn't have to wear the CPAP mask, aka she snores.eek.gif"Did I say that?"smile.gif

Yeah, I'm trying to use up space banked Weeks.  I do like timeshare.  We use it for our local mountain (4 hour drive) all the time because we're spoiled.  Plus I can use Bonus Weeks for non-holiday weekends.  Much nicer to be on resort than in a motel room 20 min from the slopes.

Also turns out that for how I arrange ski trips, usually a 3BR/3BA condo works better than a 2BR.  That's harder to find near ski destinations using timeshare.

So are you going to Big Sky in March?

So how the voting takes place? Each one at the gathering just pick something up out of the blue or there are contenders established upfront?

No.

I already have 2 weeks booked in Vail over Xmas and NY's. That's why I'm asking about next seasons gathering, so I can start looking to see if there places I can get into through my timeshares.

Usually the vote is mid week, which is usually the day most attended by the masses.

There is a time for nominations by Bears, the nominated area is chatted up by the person who nominates who should also be the person prepared to head up the planning if his/her area is chosen, and a vote is taken by a show of hands.

The only real hard and fast rule is that we don't go back to a place for two years.

There are some other minor details but that's pretty much it in a nutshell.

As far as where the Gathering will be. it is kinda like the IOC voting on an Olympic site. First, you have to be attending to vote. Then if you want to submit an option, like we did for Lake Tahoe this past season. We submitted verbally Lake Tahoe then a 3-5 minute verbal presentation (no slideshows, graphs or charts or brochures allowed) on why the gathering should be at Tahoe and we were persuasive enough. Same when the vote was brought to Big Sky for this year. Because of the "two year rule" next year sites like Utah, Summit County, Jackson Hole will be back in the running along with any new suggestions, Tahoe and Big Sky will not be a choice.

Never too early to argue for a location that is convenient to a Southwest Airlines served airport.

You mean there are bribes involved?

Anyway, for those voters / nominaters, I'd like to humbly suggest the PNW ... or even BC.

Is this worth 20 votes? :)

I know the gathering was at Tahoe last year but I really think we need to have the gathering at Squaw Valley next year because of this:

I second that!

I gave up on Big sky (with a ski club) 2 years ago due to limited flights & high Air prices to Bozeman.

Likely to miss this years gathering for same reason.

Mdskier:  you need friends in SLC.  I'm flying there on SW, then driving up to Big Sky with a friend who lives there.  Stopping at Targhee on the way north.  We're caravanning with one of my ski buddies who drives to SLC from NM.  He'll be providing transportation for a couple others who are flying into SLC.  For us, it makes perfect sense because we'll spend the week after the Gathering at Alta Lodge with other friends.  Of course, easier for he and I because we are retired so being gone from home for a few weeks is not that hard to arrange.

I keep looking at the places within driving distance of Spokane or Portland for new places to explore.

Might be a lower ski year for us since we're house hunting a lot. Portland got removed due to rain/low clowds

8 months of the year. Current focus is CA between Truckee & Sacramento

From Portland the Mt Hood areas: Mt Hood Meadows, Timberline & Ski Bowl are within an hour or so drive.

Mt Bachelor is 2 or 3 hours away.

I've skied from Spokane: local hill is 49 deg North(one time & we had sun on one side, a heavy blizzard at other side & howling wind in the

middle).  If you head east to Cour d' Arlene ID area you have Silver Mt and a great area Schweitzer.  Hop over the border from Spokane

to Apex Alpine & Red Mt BC.

None of the above are known for steeps except maybe Mt Hood Meadows & a bit at Schweitzer.
