Thread Starter

I found some pictures of Volkl athletes at Levi from last weekend. Does anyone know what is on the shovel area of these slalom skis?1000

Not sure...I've got this years volkl wc 165 sl and they dont have it (not that they would, I'm just a scrubfrown.gif) could be a dampening device seeing as how it's near the shovel...

Volkl WC athletes have had that on the shovel of their SL skis for a few years. I think last? year, or maybe 2 years ago there was a similar thread on Byggmark's ski.

It's a Marker product ... not sure what it's for.

Check out post 10 here ...tdk6 has a youtube video that addresses it (in german) ... on what looks like the 2011 ski.

I'm going to guess it to reduce harmonic vibrations in the ski.   Remember the peizo electronics added to dampen the skis a few years back.

Would be interested in the actual answer though.

Tip protector for the gates?

Its a Marker product designed to prevent the ski from vibrating. I dont know how it works but I guess its mechanical. I tried to ordet it for my skis this year but I got a simple NO from the rep. Not awailable for end consumers. Not me anyway.

I had no time to go to Levi theis year, never had LOL, but looking at the photos in the OP I see interesting things. Only one pair of skis are from this year. At least I think so. The tip changed for this year. See the skis at the top, they have a claw type plastic protector. The others have a round one.

Also, check out how far forward the bindings are mounted:

Think you missed all the skis led on their side in the main photo. They all have the 'new' tip deflector. Surely though at WC level, a plastic tip deflector is personal choice. As to whether you want offset or regular. They are only screwed on.

When I first saw these gizmos on the new Volkls, they reminded me of the old Dynastar course SL's from WAAAAY back....they had a red thingy (that's code for dampening devicewink.gif) on their tips...

You could be right about the option of eather a round or a claw shaped tip but there are two types of tips in the photos. In the top photo the girl to the left has a par with the claw tip. The other, two pairs with round tips. In the bottom photo the skis lying on the ground on their baces are clearly equipped with different tips. They are at the same angel and look different. Also, the skis with their bases facing the camera are also equipped with the claw tip.

On the other hand, I have no experiance with the womens 155cm skis. Only with the mens 165. Im also no expert on Volkl. Only started to mess arround with them last season. Ive never taken the plastic tip off the ski to check how it works.

Last years Volkl SL's were mostly black with yellow down the sides (topsheet of course)...tip deflectors are a personal choice. I'm not sure if I'll keep mine or not (i've got this years SL) , might go with round as well.  They are removed rather easily btwsmile.gif

So you can switch them between the skis mid season? Thanks for the info. Did not know that.
