Looking at wider skis - should I be looking at shorter ones?

Hello all,

I'm 5'10", 160 lbs, skiing in western Colorado, and I've always skied on skis that were about 180 cm long. Now that I'm looking to upgrade from narrow skis to something in 100 - 105 mm range, should I be looking at shorter skis? I guess I'm just asking because I can't get used to how huge these skis are compared to what I'm used to!

So. How does width of a ski affect the length that the skier should be looking for? Same length as usual or something potentially shorter? I suppose the point is extra surface area for more floatation, so I'm guessing the answer is to stay in the same length range.

Thanks!

When you say your old skis were 180 cm skis what were they. Were they oldschool straight skis? or were they shaped skis?

That is a very important point.  If they were straightskis, then your equiv. new front side shaped skis would be a bit  shorter.

If they are really 180 shaped skis, you still should get about 180 or even longer fat skis; because the fat skis will have pronounced tip/tail rocker and less running length.

But, if you are only 160lbs, you potentially don't need a super fat ski.  There are a lot of 98mm skis which maybe a bit more versatile, and give the same float to you as for a bigger guy who weighs much more.

They were shaped skis, with a 70-ish mm waist. I started off on the skinnies, but by the time I was on 180's, they were shaped.

Thanks for your reply! And I hadn't really considered the factor of rocker and running length. Very useful to think about.

Where do you normally ski?  Depending on where you normally ski there may be a lot of options to demo some fatter skis to see what you like.
