Early opening days in NC for 2012 - on Halloween!

There will be skiing in NC on Halloween!  Sugar and Cataloochee announced the news today.  Making snow round the clock.  Getting dumped on by the backside of Hurricane Sandy.

Snowshoe is starting to think opening by Thanksgiving might be possible.  Think cold!

Apparently Cat is going to stay open for day skiing as long as it's conditions allow.

If you are asking me . . . no.  Cat is a 4-hour drive, Sugar is 3.5 in a slightly different direction.  The runs that are open take about 2 min to finish when making turns, 1 min going GS style.  Plus I have daily chauffeur duty for my 6th grade daughter.  Our first local ski trip will be the week before Christmas at Massanutten.

Mnut got a dusting at the top of the mountain.  Could see it on the webcam today.  Wintergreen is an hour south east of Mnut and got a lot more snow, but that will probably be melted before the weekend.

Would like to go to Sugar Saturday, but afraid it wont be worth it...probably just go fishing instead.

Those snow totals look pretty good....

Mount up some rock skis and head to Sugar!

Things must have gone well at Cat and Sugar the last couple days.  Both will be open this weekend and charging a bit more for lift tickets.

Snowshoe in WV finally has power restored, but still dealing with issues with the phone system.  Still under a State of Emergeny.  Announced a tentative opening date of Nov. 21.

Lots of pics and video to be found on Facebook.

Probably be busy at Cat today. Season pass holders are going for Picture Day. Have 3 slopes open, unloading from mid-station, $30 lift tickets ($39 normally). Don't know if ski school is open but probably have something going on. The base is 8-18 inches, which sounds like plenty given that folks often end up skiing on 10 inches during early (Dec) and late season (after mid-Feb to mid-March).

Sugar set their prices to $40/$30 Adult/Child for full day for the weekend. Normal prices are $54/$34. Have 7-30 inches on the ground and not running any snow guns while people are on the slopes. I assume ski school is open since it was open on Halloween, at least for private lessons.

For those unfamiliar with skiing in NC, when fully open Cat has 25 acres, 740' vertical, longest run 1.4 mile, avg annual snowfall 40"; Sugar has 115 acres, 1200' vertical, longest run 1.5 mile. avg annual snowfall 78". 100% snowmaking coverage is necessary for a ski area to stay in business.  During early season, the snow guns are often blowing during the day on open slopes.

If you go to the Big Sky Gathering, you won't be solo. smile.gif

Cat and Sugar still open today, but temps warming up so significant melting happening.

Cat is a quality operation.  Apparently if someone takes a run today and isn't happy, they can get a full refund.  They are going to try to stay open during the week.  Usually just open Fri-Sun during early season, assuming cold enough for snowmaking.

I'll be at Cat this weekend. If anybody else is, drop a PM, I'll check in a couple of times a day.
