As far as I know, this is not the case anymore... or at least not as much as it was. In cycling UCI has rule (don't remember for how long now, but it has been for 2 or 3 years at least), that every single piece of equipment needs to be freely available in stores for normal consumers. In skiing there's no such rule, so things are different in skiing, and most of stuff used on WC is not available in normal stores. It doesn't mean you can't get that stuff, but it's not as easy as walking in store and throwing some money on desk.

Ok, I might be showing my age, Greg Lemond was still on his bike back then.

But my point is , it doesn't matter how much money I spend, I wont ever carve a turn like Ted Ligety, these guys are incredible athletes. give them the credit not the equipment.

The sports equipment today is so good across the board, that unless you make a totally boneheaded purchase, you can still hit the mountain and have fun.

bplatt03443 I totally agree. Equipment is more or less all same. Sure there are small differences but in general it's athlete who is winning. At least in sport like this. Moto GP or Formula 1 might be different, but in skiing, these guys and girls would win on any mark of skis, boots, helmets, underwear etc.
