Pitztaler Glacier, 20 and 21 October 2012

One week ago, on Friday the 19th we drove a 1000 km  trip during the night from Holland to Austria to ski on Saturday and Sunday on one of the glaciers which are open.

Austria doesn´t have the highest peaks in the Alps. But it has the most glaciers open to ski compared to Italy, Switzerland and France. Hintertux is open all year. And the Stubaier Glacier, the Molltaler Glacier, the Kitzsteinhorn, Sòlden and the Pitztaler Glacier are usually opening at the end of September.

Many skiteams are training on the glaciers, but there is always room for recreational skiers and snowboarders.

Since there are not many open skiresorts in the autum, some glaciers like Stubai and Hintertux tend to be overcrowded. Actually it is peak seison. When other resorts open, starting at the end of November the glaciers are not that crowded anymore.

In the wintertime it can be very cold on the glaciers and there are no trees to give a bit of comfort. But last weekend the weather was quite warm and we could ski without wearing a jacket.

If you like to have more information, you can visit the website of the glacier:

This weekend there is a lot of snow fallen in the Alps. Also at lower altitudes. This webcam picture is from Zermatt:

Will be in that area over Christmas. I'm hoping that the Swiss Alps keep getting some of that white stuff over the next 8 weeks!

Today was a a good but also very cold day on the glaciers. On our Dutch forum (wintersporters.nl) are almost every day live reports with photos or videos:

Actually I needed the music during the long nightly drive to keep me awake. And I must say it really worked well.
