What people have said in this thread already makes a lot of sense, but I want to throw out another possibility: a lot of good, adventurous, eastern skiers like a 99mm ski with tip and tail rocker and camber under foot. There are a bunch of these around, it's become almost its own category of ski. Examples include Rossi S3, Blizzard Bonafide, many others. Here's a thread on the S3s that includes some discussion of others: http://www.epicski.com/t/112165/rossignol-s3
For good skiers in northern Vermont, who ski the woods, this is a common daily driver. I know that Ottawa is not northern Vermont (all too well, since I live in Ottawa), but Stowe, Jay & Smuggs are about 4.5 hours away, and Sugarbush and Mad River are 5. IMO they are more worth the longer drive vs Tremblant and Whiteface.
I know some people on this thread will think this is crazy for the east, but it really depends what you are after. If you want to have as much on on groomers and hardpack as you can, 99mm skis are not the thing. But If you are a pretty good skier, who can get a 99mm ski on edge, you can ski groomers just fine on them, a lot of them are pretty good bump skis, and they shine when you get tired of skiing the groomers and look for something more fun/adventurous. As for Camp Fortune its true, a lot of it looks like this:
But there is one run (Swan Dive, below) which would be a double black anywhere in the east. Patrol is pretty cautious about opening it (less so on a weekday during the day) but I've gotten permission to duck the rope a few times even when its closed. I also skiied it (without permission) on the day I took the picture below. If you're the sort of skier for whom the picture below looks like more fun than the picture above, you might want to consider a mid-fat rocker.
The picture below was also take at Camp Fortune. Again, a fat rocker is more fun here than a stiff groomer oriented ski.
On another note, I am in Ottawa, and I have some older more groomer-oriented skis that I would part with for not much: Head iM75s for very little, Solomon X-Wingfuries for a bit more...
pm me about that if you are interested, or if you feel like hitting up camp fortune together.
