Speaking of skiing in your swim attire, I'm planning to head up Friday night to put in a last resort day.  What's skiing better right now - Summit at Alpine or Granite / Shirley at Squaw?

Last weekend was my last of the season.  Conditions at Squaw were similar to the previous weekend.  In other words, Main Backside was good in the morning until things softened up.  Then, the entire upper mountain, depending on aspect, was good, with good coverage.  Down lower, it was more thin and soupy.  They ran KT the whole weekend, and West Face was good until the bottom.  My biggest gripe is that Headwall was on money-hold.  It had some of the best snow, but Reverse Traverse from Siberia was an unnecessary pain.

Here's my customary video installment.  I'll also try to put together my season highlights when I get a chance.

For me it's time to get ready to ski down under in under 2 months.

Well, that's topical.  Headline in today's paper reads "First Snows Hit Thredbo".

Confusingly they then attach a photo grab from the Falls Creek webcam.

We're copping a decent cold front through the south east right now.  Snow in April is quite an odd occurrence.  There's often a decent snowfall through the course of May, but it tends to disappear pretty quickly.  Opening weekend is 8-10 June, and we may or may not have snow worthy of skiing on that weekend, although there's usually sufficient man-made snow to get going, and the apres (party) scene is pretty good.  It's a fun weekend.  We're about to book some accommodation ourselves.

We skied squaw the past two days and it skied quite well. Granted it was just Shirley and Granite Chief that we skied but it was pretty damn good conditions. I might get to a-pine over the next few days, schedule permitting.

Skied Squaw yesterday and was happy to see Granite Chief spinning, which was clearly the best place to go.  Snow held up pretty nicely until about 12:30 or so, at which point the carnage began.  Snow got sticky quick and patrol had their hands full almost immediately.  Saw several people get taken out on sleds.

My friend and I stopped on some rocks in the granite wilderness to... enjoy the view (it was 4/20 after all) and heard a loud crack below us, then saw a skier laid out near a few trees.  Fortunately a couple of patrollers happened to be passing through right then.  Hope he wasn't injured too badly.

For documentation purposes, this is how much snow is still left in Shirley Bowl on closing weekend.  Kinda lame, but it's been such a rough year since the big December storms I guess it's hard to get too upset with KSL.

Squaw skied quite well of the last day season. Still a couple of days left at A-Pine then off to some BC skiing....after the Mothers Day Mini.

I skied Kirkwood from 930-430 today, my only daytrip from the Bay Area this year. It got sticky where the sun hit hard on the flats, but I rubbed on some wax during my first break from about 1-2 and again at about 3:30 which helped. I could have gotten one more ride on Cornice, but the last 50 of so chairs got pelted with snowballs. There were still people jumping off what I think is called Jim's at 430. There was an easier entrance from where this picture was taken, but I'm planning to ski next Friday at Alpine, then go to Oregon so I left it for the 20-year-olds.

Ha. I kept looking up Granite Saturday but just couldn't find the energy--too hot for that much of a climb. Bad on me--I didn't make it up there all season. Now I can think about it all summer and fall.  Made it up to Keyhole Sunday but that's a lot shorter climb.

Too bad the close off Squaw when the resort closes.

^^^^ This; seems like they they could make money on the Tram ticket if they allowed riders with skis and skins to access the upper mountain after they stop spinning the lifts. Possible liablility issues, but still .......

Definitely a liability and Squaw not wanting to pay insurance in case someone gets hurts.  All you need is a jerk with a fat wallet and a lawyer to sour it for everybody else.

Granite Chief skied well Sunday, softened right away

too bad they had to close up shop

At least there will be Alpine next weekend ...

You could tell that Squaw was doing a lot to manage the snow.  I'm betting that this week with temps in the 70's isn't going to help and you'll see the snow burn away pretty quickly.

Here is a little video I threw together from some iPhone footage.

^^ Is that Gaffney hitting Center Line at the very end?  That was a nice line in those conditions.

Yeah, and his son at the bottom.  I wish I'd gotten the video going sooner because his son ripped it up before Rob hit it.  We had a nice chat with him.  Good people!

Northstar just posted this recap video of the season.

For a bad year, it was a pretty good year, ya know?

On TGR Tahoe forum, some people were talking about the usually closed to the public Palisades at Kirkwood opening early this year since the resort closed yesterday. Last week, you would get you pass pulled for being there. This week it's wide open, but you have to hike almost 2,000 vertical feet to get there.

Following is an iPhone4 picture of Jim's at Kirkwood from below with a snowboarder tumbling down it. The easier entrance is at far right. Some people were able to sneak into the center, but most were jumping the rock band just left of center including a skier that I saw straight-line into Sentinel.

While security was searching backpacks at the bottom of the lift, they were not searching pockets so I got up there with a 16 oz. can of Stella and a flask, even though I was only wearing shorts, a long sleeve SF Giants t-shirt and my helmet. A lot of people were tail-gaiting in the parking lot beginning at 9 AM.

Thanks.

The music was BBQ Blues, which I thought was appropriate for the change of season. smile.gif

I finally put together my season highlights edit.  Some of my goals for the season were to hit more of Squaw's hike-to terrain and do some modest drops.
