Sorry if I missed this - don't know how there couldn't be a thread on this - but there will be skiing in the east tomorrow! I (unfortunately) will not be there.

Season Pass and Express Pass holders only, but that is OK since they should be rewarded for their loyalty and only one short trail will be open. But open is open. Way to go big K!biggrin.gif

That is actually really cool.  I can't remember an eastern mountain opening anything this early ever...not even the big K.

Killington used to try to open after the first frost, just so they could say they did.  In the 70's and 80's sometimes they would open in September for a day or two.  With global warming and with Killington humbled by financial missteps....all that is a distant memory.

Was anyone there? Got photos?

Actually K has opened earlier many times.

They estimate a few hundred showed up.

Don't recall them ever opening in Sept. but they did open Oct.1 several times. Don't know what global warming & financial missteps had to do with them opening later. It had more to do with them putting in a gondola eliminating the mid-station on the old double chair the gondola replaced. They used to open early from the mid-station to the summit but after the gondola was put in they needed top to bottom coverage to open. Installing a stairway from the summit (top of gondola) over to the North Ridge chair (pictured above) is what allows them to push the button for early season skiing again. You need to ride the gondola to the top, use the stairway over to North Ridge to ski, then walk the stairway back to the gondola for the ride down. The stairway is not steep, it's more of a horizontal hike.

Oh those pics above are from this past Sat, so are the ones below

Looks a hell of a lot better than what A Basin will be offering today.

Yeah it sucks in the east.

Eat your heart out western snobs.
