Arne Backstrom Blastathon

Where do we begin?

Arne Backstrom is a household name if you have a ski household, right?

In the spirit of carrying on a legacy that Arne would be proud of, his friends and family have organized a weekend of enjoying a few of the outdoor activities that Arne loved to raise money which is used to create awareness in young people about preserving our world for the longevity of enjoying these adventures that we love.  After all, our adventures and ecological impact awareness should go hand in hand, right?

On the trip report;

The Second annual Arne Backstrom Blastathon

Day One: Stand Up Paddle Board

Several Bears were in attendance, in Kayak and Paddle Board including Bud Heishman, Philpug, Trekchick, Lovebug and Noofus

Dad and son....

(points if you can guess who the dad is)

The group paddled out nearly 4 miles and joined in a circle to pause a moment and remember Arne and what he stood for.

Of course there was food and beverage after the paddle, with some great prizes, from POC, Patagonia, Oakley, Tecnica Blizzard, (so many I can't remember them all)

this weekend was pulled together by Clem, and inspired some amazing skiers to come together!

Day 2 - Bike Ride.

Shuttles were lined up to get riders to the trail head, with Varsity and JV groups to fit every need.  Considering how amazing these athletes are there were a few of us who could have used a middle school class. biggrin.gif

Thanks to Clem and Dana for having the patience and kindness to hang with the slow kids.  We appreciate you!

After the ride we fed our bellies with Chimichangas made from Arne's favorite recipe.

Sorry, no pic of the food, but it was definitely worth mentioning.....drool.gif

Group shot of everyone who rode.  The weekend was filled with a great vibe and a feeling of love for Arne and what he believed in.

Disclaimer:  Some of these photos were taken by others and shared on the facebook wall.

There was a photographer on site for both days who will be posting an album soon.

One more shot that Michelle Parker took of Ralph Backstrom overlooking Marlette Lake on the ride Sunday.

What a positive weekend!  Celebrating a life well-lived beats the hell out of the alternative... It is so very encouraging to see so many people that Get It (tm).  Great to see Bud, Phil, Trekchick, Lovebug, Noofus, Dana n' Clem (hooray for manufacturers keeping in touch) contributing to the love.  I heard some of the activities were, um, new and/or challenging to some; the water ingested and scrapes incurred was for the bestest of causes, party on.

The father and son pic looks familiar somehow... I can't quite think of a name, but the balance they display is not unlike the chaotic grace I have seen in racing at Kitzbuhel...

Yes, great event!  Sorry I could not make the Mtn. Bike day but had a great time with the paddling and the fact that my wife actually participated in the event too.  Thanks again Clem and crew for hosting such a fun event.  I have a feeling this thing will grow larger each year?!?!

That weekend was a hell of a lot of fun.  I came away sore, sunburnt, bruised and cut up... and it was awesome biggrin.gif

A fantastic weekend indeed. All about pushing bounderies, spending time with old friends and meeting quite a few new as well. Thanks all - especially those who helped this novice SUP and MTB person not only survive but deeply enjoy both activities. And today, they started making snow here in High Country CO. Summer and winter all in one week!yahoo.gif

FTM, I wish you had been here.  You would love doing this stuff with this group!

Bud, you missed a great ride

Noofus and Lovebug,  Ziggy misses Kona.   You'll have to bring her back for another visit

We have to give props to Emily who not only SUP'ed her first time but went the whole distance (8 miles).  Very impressive Studette!

This is a video that Ralph Backstrom put together which is worth watching....

While I couldn't do both days I did do the SUP event. What a great day that was. If anyone thinks that it is just paddling around on a surfboard, get out on one, what a core workout it is. It was a great day with a bunch of awesome people for a fantastic cause. See you all next year.
