I've never seen these on demo, so I'm hoping some gear experts here could steer me in the right direction. They would replace 5 or 6 year old 170 cm Mantras. I need a 1-ski quiver for Snowbird, Snowmass, Jackson, etc...
I'm 5'6", 145 lbs, 46 yo former racer, still ski pretty aggressively. I ski on 160 cm Volkl Speedwall SLs most days back East, and Mantras on "powder days." The FX94 would be mainly for Utah and Colorado, sadly only 5-10 days per year. When west I'm hitting ungroomed steeps, trees, crud, occasional bumps, whatever. But if offpiste gets too manky I want a ski that rips and carves respectably enough on the groomers. And can hold an edge... understanding it won't come close to my Speedwalls. Also I'm more of a short radius turner / finnesse skier, e.g. in crud I turn far more than those burly chargers doing Rendezvous Bowl in 5 turns. I'm thinking a 15-20 radius is about right. Not interested in any width over 100mm, looking for something more versatile. Lighter, energetic skis preferred as well.
These are for inbound skiing. Some hiking of course.
My experience with other skis:
Volkl Mantras (170cm): I like the old ones and demoed the new ones, was more impressed with the new version. BUT they are a little stiff and burly for a guy my size, and find they don't always come around as fast as I'd like in crud and tight spaces. I guess I'd like something just a little softer and turnier than the Mantra, but still with decent energy and carving potential.
MX88s (168cm): Liked them a lot but found them a little catchy in crud, and just a little too damp, heavy and un-turny for me.
Nordica Steadfast (170 cm): good in cut up powder but found them a little dead on hard snow.
Sultan 94 (165 cm): lots of fun, easy to ski, but they felt a bit unsubstantial, kind of like toys. (too short?)
Bonafide and Nordica Hell and Back: considered these, haven't had the chance to demo.
Here's what I could buy now:
Last year's FX94 for $700 (166 cm)
Last year's Mantra for $400 (170 cm)
Any thoughts? Any other skis I haven't thought of? Am I asking too much for one ski?
BTW I've read all the relevant threads, but somehow my story seems a little different. Isn't everyone's?
