MT Biking in the Denver area

I will spend this week in Denver working and was hoping to get in a mountain bike ride.  I need to go by Thursday.  Could someone suggest a place where I could go after 3:00 PM and finish by nightfall?  Also, where is a good place to rent a Mt. Bike?

On another note, took a train from Emeryville, CA to Denver, CO.  I thought it was a great experience and I got to sight see a lot (I usually drive everywhere, so don't get to see as much).  Got to see a lot of my favorite place in the world - Tahoe (and to learn a lot, two folks from the Amtrack museum were on board and told us about the whole region and past events all the way up to Reno when they had to get off), and a place I would like to get to know better, Colorado.  The canyons and the Colorado river are amazing.  One thing that surprised me is the mooning/flashing by the folks in the rafts.  Seemed like it was a must, almost every single raft had at least 1 person moon the train.  I managed to take a picture of 4 guys, standing next to each other (that's the best i could do considering the moving train and a phone camera) and mooning the train.  On the other hand, God bless the women that flashed the train, we need more skiers like them.  Taking the train back next weekend, can't wait to go back (not just because of the flashers :) ).  Passed within stone throw of some lifts at Winter Park.

How much of a challenge are you looking for? There are trails right in the metro area, although for serious riding and awesome scenery, I'd get out further. Buffalo Creek and Pine Valley are within a late afternoon.

Both are about 60 miles away form where I am, so that'd work.  I'd say that I'm about an upper level intermediate rider, I'd like a challenge, but not looking for anything too extreme.  Thanks for the reply, further details would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, just got back from Boulder (the chocolate company up there).  Saw a bunch of bikers, planning on going up there early Saturday morning.

Thanks for your input and suggestions.  Ended up going to Boulder, Heil Valley Trail (right off hwy 36).  Definitely a whole lot more rocky than what I'm used to in California, but good times were had.  Rented a bike for about $35 for 4 hrs at the bike shop on Arapahoe and 36.
