Smartwool TML Mid weight

Hi

 

Does anybody has an opinion on the Smartwool TML Midweight midlayer?

 

Its 2/3 merino and 1/3 nylon, which leaves people questioning about how it would perform.

 

I like the idea it has nylon, and it looks something I could ski on without a shell on top, when weather is good, or as a midlayer under shell for the cold days (and I like the idea that its less bulky than a polartec fleece, for example). The nylon helps that, it keeps form, has some level of wind resistance.

 

But otoh, it has one third of synthetics and we known this could be fishy

Hi, 

 

I have had 2 of theese jackets (with hood)this winter and i ended up selling them both. In the store they looked really nice and attractive. Low bulk factor, warm, stretchy, great fabric feeling and initially a good fit. Main use was as a layer under my GT shell or Softshell jakcets, and they worked great for that purpose. They would not be ideal as a top layer by themsalves, except in hot spring skiing conditions, as they do not block wind/rain more then any other regular wool top. What put me off was the cut and fit. They have a weird twist on the upper 1/3 of the zipper, thru the hood that does not feel or look good. It acts floppy and bulky when not using the hood and the collar does not stay up at all. In adition, if you wanted to use it on a causal trip to town you would look silly and uncormfortable in it.

 

Ortovox have a similar jacket with Merino/fleece blend and the fit of the collar / hood is excellent. I got 2 of those instead and i can highly recommend them instead.

I've tried and the hood is a bit weird, feels like scuba diving suit

 

So I will wait and see what I'll do for midlayer
