Ski Dreamin' Yet?

post #1 of 36
Thread Starter

Loveland Basin in Colorado is approximately 50 days from beginning snowmaking operations for the 12-13 season. Super excited about the upcoming season. Lets hear what some of you have on the agenda for winter. Big trips, landing new tricks, stepping up to bigger terrain, learning a different mode? For me...new gear in my futuresmile.gif Base layers are shot, socks have seen much better days and blew the zipper on my jacket in a fall in the Berthoud Pass backcountry.

Peace

I'm looking forward to A-Basin opening about the same time on the other side of Loveland Pass to see whether the patched up leg will perform properly.

This is going to be my 3rd season in the mountains and I'm pretty stoked.

The first season was record snow fall,

Second season was marginal snow fall (except for a few weeks the end of Feb/first of March)

The Third season is sure to hold all kinds of magic, right?

I'm going in to this season with both calves surgically altered to to relive a nerve impingement that limited my skiing to shorter runs, and shorter days. A test late May after the first surgery was showed real promise. So much so that I realized how much my skiing was suffering from my pain.

I have 2 months of going to war with the stepmill, ellipitical, and kettlebells to get ready for the season.

Probably lap Palmer this weekend though.

Looking forward to this years Trew Gear. Getting my Billygoats mounted up, and building a waxing bench in my new garage too. No more waxing in my bathroom on an ironing board.

My every other season new skis are on the way.  I doubt any of my skis will get many serious runs this year though.  I'll be mostly skiing greens and blues with my 10 year old this season. Things will pick up in a few years as he gets his ski legs.  Also hoping to get lil' sis to pick up skiing again.

Nov = tbd

Dec = Whistler

Jan = SLC

Feb = SLC

Late Feb / early March = Lech / St Anton + Verbier

late March = SLC

April = Whistler

May = tbd

Trying to figure out what to do with all the extra skis. 178 MX 88's and BMX108's are superflous so they'll be sold, and there's a pair of BMX88's sitting in SLC that I don't know if I'm going to bother mounting or just sell (any advice?) don't know if it's worth keeping the Atomic Access in SLC along with the Mythics, MX108's (the Old ones - YES!) and Pro Riders,  what goes to Europe on that trip..........

Then there's all the extra Arcteryx stuff, I/O and I/Os goggles, extra bindings (damn you SAC) etc that are hanging out in the garage - stay, go, sell?.

Decisions, decisions.......

Hey, who's my best jacket customer? Any other colors you need?

post #9 of 36

ahh, you must be looking for me?

I have a deck to put on my house, a new hot tub, some painting done and I need some AT bindings so the jackets are gonna have to wait mad.gif

post #10 of 36

These came today FedEx (flat).  I mounted the bindings on them then slathered some all purpose wax on them for storage til playtime.  Still waiting on the brakes I ordered for them.  Don't tell my boss I did this while logged in to work..

Snofun. You're my hero. And people give me a hard time for going on 4-5 ski trips a year. You've got me beat.

post #12 of 36

Ski dreamin' still. It never stops. I think they call it withdrawal.

Going to attempt a base repair on the harts this summer/fall. If it works they might be my daily drivers for the season. Might get to get some new poles to replace a bent one. They have to fit my old Scott grips though.

Is it December yet?

post #13 of 36

Can't wait!! I think I'm going to get a pass to Eldo and an Epic Local this year. Eldo is too close not to get in 1/2 a day b4 work.. cool.gif

Moved farther North in Washington and we are still unpacking.  Starting to give the skis and boots long meaningful glances while carrying junk through the garage.  Looking up into the North Cascade snowfields on the way to the store.

Things normally don't really get happening around here till around Thanksgiving time and the clock seems to be slowing down.  Thank God for golf this time of year.

post #15 of 36

I still have a ways to go on my rehab  on my knee/ankle/shoulder, right now, I am quite happy being 4 months out till the season.

post #16 of 36

Not checking weather reports yet or anything, but have a fair haul of new gear to work into the rotation once things start up. New Arcteryx softshell pants, a Marmot Neoshell jacket, pair of Line Influence 115's, remounted my Coombas with last year's F12's. Plus got an ABS pack. Pretty sure I'm going back to Canada this year too.

I'm always ski dreamin' in the summer.  This forum is a great tool for that when it's 100 outside.

This year I'm looking forward to getting back to Colorado to ski with the family and wife.  She's been limited for the past couple years with little ones, but now they are old enough to say back home with Grandma for a week!

We've decided to delay our Montana trip to enjoy the mountains in the summer and do some fly fishing.  Since we really can only hit the mountains twice a year, we figured we would try some snow and some warm sun.

It's hard to imagine how skiing could be better, but here's my idea. Spring should come first, then Winter, then Fall. I'd be a lot more psyched to start with Spring skiing, which is pretty kickass in our parts, then segue to full winter, and then allow my enthusiasm to peter out with Autumn, which is often the worst part.

I have been mostly focused on golf recently, but had my first skiing dream in a while last night- something about a boot with a detachable sole plate that stays in the binding when you fall...didn`t seem very practical after I woke up, but I guess 2 blown ACLs gets you thinking.

post #20 of 36

Just ordered a black/green Columbia shell to sort of go with my new skis.

I like this idea a lot, but let's expand it to include one's lifespan, with a little upgrade: birth -----> ~ 55 years old, then reverse the whole process, until death spontaneously occurs around 20 (much younger and you start to lose all sense of proportion).  It might, of course, involve PEDs.

Well, this will be my 4th season skiing... First season was shakey just learning how to ski (2009-2010), the second(2010-2011) was amazing, the third (2011-2012).... well lets not talk about that season....

I am deployed to Afghanistan, but in the meantime, I bought a new pair of skis ( 2012 Rossingol Avenger 76 Basalt TPI2 skis w/ Axium 120 bindings), Powder Bowl jacket and pants from Patagonia, and Oakley Ski Goggles, all at over 50% off the retail price!!

When I get  back, it will be the start of the season and ill have a 3 month break from work. I plan on buying a season pass, a 10 pack of lessons to start, and ski my heart out!

post #23 of 36

Is it bad that im watching instructional ski videos on YouTube in July and August?

post #24 of 36

depends on what you are doing while you're watching them  wink.gif

haah, you need to order up some good ski movies and crank the A/C (if you have it there)

Are you 10th Mountain?

 Your N.Y. location make me wonder.  Stay healthy.

Nope, I am with the NY Army National Guard. We do a lot of training up at Ft Drum though.....

post #27 of 36

get the whooooooooole month of january off to ski. my school does a 4-1-4 schedule meaning that we only take 1 class in january and only need to do it 3 out of 4 years. so...you could say i'm looking forward to it

post #28 of 36

^^^Way to work the system, dudeicon14.gif

Where will you be spending January?

post #29 of 36

Nov: No skiing, I will be in Australia/NZ Nov. 4-25, highlights being my 7th total eclipse Nov. 14 and hiking the Milford Track Nov. 17-21.

Dec: Never make plans, will drive to Mammoth as soon as there's enough snow

Jan: I want to go to the Alps late in the month, preferably the Arlberg. No committed plans yet

Feb: Cat skiing at Mustang Feb. 23-25.  Total time in western Canada will probably be 10-14 days

Mar: Annual timeshare week at Snowbird.  The Gathering is the second week after the timeshare, not convenient but not out of the question either, likely a last minute call.

Apr: NASJA annual at Mammoth

Late season at Mammoth until it closes

This will be my 3rd ski season in retirement.  Thus there is potential for much more cherry-picked daytrip skiing in SoCal, but the last 2 seasons have been crappy here.  El Nino raises the odds I'll get more of that in 2012-13.

post #30 of 36

I go through the same routine every year.  The day after my last day on the mountain I store my stuff and then completely forget about skiing in an emotional way.  I don't want to ski, and I don't think about it at all.  Then in late July or early August I have the dream.  It mugs me in the middle of an otherwise restful night of sleep.  It has something to do with deep powder and nobody around to track it but me, or some variation, and then I'm returned to that gnawing waiting for the snow to fly.

I'm waiting...
