Hi guys and gals,

It's probably been about 15 years or so since I've last done any serious snow skiing and I've been aching to get back.  I was taught how to by my dad when I was 6 years old and it came to me pretty naturally then.  Anyways, back to the topic intended.  I was interested in hearing suggestions for boots.  I'm a moderately large guy, 6'2" and 210lbs.  My hard measured foot size is 29.5cm by 108mm.  No one in the area carries a boot that is larger than 105mm width.  Because I'm coming back to skiing I am not comfortable dumping $500 into a pair of boots that I might find I don't enjoy right away.  So, what do you suggest?

My next question would be in regards to ski length.  I'm probably going with a partial all mountain ski so that I can hit the trees once I get my feet back under me.  And I might as well ask in regards to your suggestions on skis and bindings as well.

The help is greatly appreciated,

Brett

A good bootfitter is the key to getting boots that will work & you will enjoy.  Maybe post that part in the "Ask the Boot Guys" forum.  I am sure a 105mm last can be adjusted to accommodate your width.

As far as skis go, I would recommend renting demos for awhile, conducting searches on here & other websites, taking a few refresher lessons & asking your instructor to steer you in the right direction.  Proper length & model has much to do with the type of skiing want to do & the type of skier you are.  Generally starting out, I would say something chin height to eye level is safe.

Oh, you don't really want to "hit the trees".  You will be happier going around them wink.gif

Welcome Back,

JF

The width of a ski boot is in almost all cases listed for a sz 26 which is the international reference size. All boots get wider as they get bigger in size usually by 1.0-1.5mm/size. Sometimes it's even more than that. 108mm for a measured 29.5 is not that wide and you will very probably be very well suited by a boot that is 100-102mm in the nominal sz 26.

FWIW......my foot is 103mm at a measured 28.5 I ski in a sz 27 boot that is advertised as 97mm. It does take some work to do that and certainly that's not a formula for everyone.....still.....that should give you an idea or two.

Don't necessarily expect your boots to "fit" out of the box because most probably, if they do.........then they really don't.

Hi

The atomic live fit is very wide. Could work for you. They come in different flexes and tolerate non standard foot shapes.
