Personally, I wished they stayed with the history of Britain thing a bit more and bagged the whole family tech thing that frankly was pointless. He should have focused on the contributions made to the music world by the brits. Don't do the music montage if you are going to leave out some of the most important bands and/songs (Sir Elton John??) . Yes, you are limited on time so cut down on the bed time story nightmare thing that was hokey and ran way too long.  Great medical system for sure and I hope we have one someday. Its a shame that we don't take care of our own citizens.   Oh well, onto the games.  Watched the beach volley ball this AM, the evil empire match was great (Russia vs. China; just kidding, we should have called it the GW Bush match) Watching the road race now with my 1st cappi of the AM.  Cheers!

It certainly wasn't perfect, but that was the point. Edgy, stodgy, quirky, and THEY GOT THE QUEEN TO SPOOF ON FILM. I mean, really???? That was awesome. As a whole, it was just the right "response" to the Beijing ceremony. It was like sardines in a helmet thread, and you geezers are saying, "Wait, but what are the Snell ratings?" biggrin.gif

I said the same thing last night.  Elton John??  Our coverage was stomped over by some storm warnings though, especially the first 30 minutes,

It appears that there was some actual lameness on the part of NBC, as usualrolleyes.gif

Here’s The Opening Ceremony Tribute To Terrorism Victims NBC Doesn’t Want You To See

The major transitional element of today's London Olympics opening ceremony was a downtempo performance of adoptive sporting anthem "Abide With Me" by Scottish singer Emeli Sandé. The song and accompanying dance were a tribute to the victims of the 7/7 terror attacks in London that claimed 52 victims days after the 2012 Summer Olympic hosts were named. (It's also been suggested the performance was a memorial to the war dead.)

and from the comments..

jcb_pa

Canada's CTV cut the tribute to the National Health Service from their broadcast. Everyone's hiding something.

Watching Womens Volleyball right now.  Someone named their daughter "Destiny Hooker"?  Really?  How sad.

The NBC coverage is certainly poor, but not as bad as the last winter Olympics.  Comcast advertised providing free streaming of many events for customers, but it keeps freezing.  I could only watch the 400 IM properly from a link off Sportlemon.tv, which I also used to watch the opening ceremonies live (and then watched it again on the big screen last night).  I also found a link into the BBC.  It is ridiculous that in the Internet age most USA citizens still have blacked out and substandard coverage of Olympic events.

Rather than watch more of this crap, the kids and I will spend most of the Olympics outdoors and try to watch basketball, soccer and some track and field live off Comcast (if it ever stops freezing) or off a link NBC would not want me to use.  At least we can avoid or fast forward through the commercials.  If NBC were smart, they would provide live coverage and I'd gladly watch the commercials.

OK, now that the Jameson's has had time clear out.....  And BTW-have you know respect for the sardines?

1- Loved the beginning shot of the dragonfly flying up the rivers and waterways through the country. Excellent- AND loved the music montage- NOTE: use of Sex Pistols "God Save the queen" which was banned in England!

2- loved the whole beginning pieces - not a big Mr Bean fan but it was funny. film clips and other segments were good. - Still think a tribute to England for surviving the bombings during WWII would have been appropriate.

3- laughed my ass off at the whole James bond queen thing. thought it showed the queen in a very positive light; as much with "hair down" as I have ever seen (not that I follow the royals)

4- really enjoyed the history part of the modernization of England.

5- still hated the whole kids jumping on the beds in the hospital and dancing nurses.  Great public health program, but do we need 20 minutes of it?

6- Still felt the literary tribute to monsters and mary poppins was WAY too long and drawn out- it did serve as a good time to refill on the whiskey....

7- liked the music tribute but no need for the story line thing which was weak and frankly stupid. The music needs no story, everyone knows every one of those bands and songs, it stands on it's own. They could have used time from the kids jumping on beds (note no helmets) segment to add more music, no Sir Elton John really? (And I'm not evan a fan)

8- BEST PART of all opening ceremonies IMHO is the parade of athletes.

9- the rest was OK, eh....

I would gladly pay a flat-fee for a selection of "pay-per" channels that allowed me to watch uninterupted broadcasts. For the 3 weeks, if I could view a good percentage of the events live and on Demand, I would gladly pay $100.00.

"Hooker" received the negative connotation from the women who followed General Joseph "Fighting Joe" Hooker's troops in the Civil War.  I wonder what her middle name is..."Tobe"?

I'd say thats a fair synopsis. I was fine with the story line you mentioned in number seven though. Maybe I'm just a sucker for cute British girls though.

granted; and with the accent to boot!  I thought they said she was actually 15!   When you get to my age, she's just a beautiful little girl. She's even too young for you! icon14.gif

IIRC correctly it was 18. Age of consent in Britain is 16 anyhow so can't be that far away from being old enough either way.

EDIT: Checked and she is actually 18. Article on the Daily Mail about her.

hmm, still way too young for me, my guess is her parents are younger than me biggrin.gif  Besides, one wife is all I need....

Women V-ball is so cool  Destiny ROCKS!  it's a marathon (no pun intended) here. Its disgustingly humid here. Watching the events all afternoon and tonight.

Dish has some streaming coverage available through our plan.  As for Hooker, innocent names like Fawn or Patience are probably best.

Well, all my friends have to love sardines......  (which explains a lot)

Was there any Led Zeppelin played during the opening ceremonies?  Just curious as we didn't get all of it thanks to weather warnings.

yes, about 3 seconds worth...

no phil collins, elton john, peter gabriel, genesis, smiths, Ozzy, Depeche Mode, Osasis, Billy idol and so on.....

So basically they were limited on time and had many bands to pick from. All well. Time to move on to the sports.

Phelps and Lochte have been selected to race in the 400 free relay in about 45 minutes along with the two top qualifiers from trials (can't remember their names). This has the potential to either be a good bounce back race or completely devastate Phelps chances at getting the four more medals he needs.

It would appear that Phelps has decided to take it easy and let other folks win some medals this time. He's probably just trying to enjoy himself and have a good time instead of going for the throat in every lap.  Kinda makes sense, but kinda disappointing from a medal count standpoint.

Watching the UK vs UAE soccer at the moment.. half time.
