Technically, product placement is when companies pay media producers to use logoed products in their productions. Sponsored athletes are expected to make their sponsor's logos visible in the media (with no compensation going to the media producers). I suspect that most of them are on a fixed contract or else you'd see more "placement shots" like ski racers popping their skis off at the end of the race.
