I need help picking out a jacket and pants. Help me decide please!

I don't really know what colors or patterns or anything make up good skiing style, so can someone help me?

Here's what I'm looking at:

http://www.backcountry.com/armada-terra-jacket-mens (Blue/Black)

With either of the following two pants?

http://www.amazon.com/Armada-Overshoot-Pant-Mens/dp/B007L0ATKS/ref=pd_sbs

ARM0282-BK.jpg

41rII3c0C9L._SX385_.jpg

http://www.backcountry.com/armada-stabilizer-pant-mens

Armada Stabilizer Pant - Men's

The only reason I thought of the blue jacket with the green pants is because BackCountry.com has both of those but they don't have the matching blue pants.

Here's the other setup I'm looking at:

http://www.backcountry.com/spyder-rival-jacket-mens?rr=t&cmp_id=&rrType=ClickEV&rrProd=SPD1753

Spyder Rival Jacket - Men's

With either of the following pants (or others if someone can recommend something good):

http://www.backcountry.com/spyder-dare-tailored-pant-mens

Spyder Dare Tailored Pant - Men's

http://www.backcountry.com/spyder-rover-pant-mens

Spyder Rover Pant - Men's

I think the white looks pretty cool with the red considering the jacket has small hints of white and the pants have small hints of red.

For the red/red combo, is that weird to wear one color from head to toe?  I think it looks pretty cool, but I don't want to look lame on the slopes.

Here's a third, less likely combo simply due to price:

http://www.backcountry.com/salomon-sideways-3l-jacket-mens

Salomon Sideways 3L Jacket - Men's

With either of these pants:

http://www.backcountry.com/salomon-sideways-bib-pant-mens

Salomon Sideways Bib Pant - Men's

http://www.backcountry.com/salomon-reflex-pant-mens

Salomon Reflex Pant - Men's

I was told the above pants would be coming back into stock soon, but for $180.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Most people have a couple different options for outerwear based on different weather conditions.  If you're looking to be really stylish I would recommend going with the colors that best match your skis, boots, poles.... and especially your helmet.  It is critical that your jacket match your helmet.Rules.gif

The only thing up there I wouldn't be caught dead wearing would be the blue camo jacket with nonono2.gif the green camo pants.  The rest of those look pretty sweet honestly.

Wow the light blue and yellow combo.  That seemed to be the breakout rad style last season..

There are some really cool stuff that go well together. SOme of that I can think of, although not really on the cheap side are:

Oakley Sethmo Jacket and Pants that are available at a good price both on oakleyvault and department of goods (specially if you get the 50% coupon). But be aware that these combo had some bad reviews regarding it`s durability, I have no experience with except for taking a look at a local shop, it`s made of goretex pro shell, but apparently doesn`t match up the quality of other pro shell gear. But the style is killer and I think the best out there. I love the orange pants to go with the green jacket, they also have the fleece, down jacket and merino baselayer so you have a complete matching set. I think you can match any color combination.

STP has some good quality stuff, you can find the combo MH Snowpocalypse jacket and pants and it`s really easy to find at least a 35% extra discount on their facebook page or twitter. They have the voltage pants which is kinda a bright yellow and a gray/black jacket. The combo is really nice and Dry.q Elite material is also top notch.

If I would buy, I would probably go with MH stuff from STP, even though I like the sethmo stuff the reviews kinda set me away of Oakley goretex gear.

Clearly I have 2 minutes to waste this morning. Teething toddler, no sleep....  Whatever... just buy what you like and what you can pay for. If you're cold and/or wet, even if it looks good, it won't help your skiing a bit.

These are the boots I have: http://www.evo.com/alpine-ski-boots/salomon-mission-rs-8.aspx

I don't have skis or a helmet yet.

My boots are orange (well, they have touches of orange) so the Oakley Sethmo combo would probably match pretty well.  Where do you find the 50% for Dept of Goods?  I wish there were coupons like that for BackCountry.com instead because BackCountry has an unlimited forever return policy whereas Dept. of Goods does not (even though they're partner sites...)

I found a 40% off coupon for Dept. of Goods, but it didn't apply to any of 6 jackets/pants that I tried.

Also, the snowpocalypse looks ugly-ish...It's grey and like lime-green...

Green pants and none of the above on jackets.

Well it doesn't help to have green pants and no jacket....

Also, I'm leaning more towards reds and oranges since my boots are orange/black.

Maybe I'm just getting old but I would always go with the best tehnical option and to hell with colour combos etc. To be honest the good techncal stuff looks best to my eyes anyway.

Sparwood + green pants.   EDIT: make it work.

I'm guessing you mean the black or white one, but that combo doesn't match my boots at all...

Also, how do sizes usually run on this kind of stuff?  I think I'm supposed to be a medium for jacket and pants but would I fit in a small or large if that's all they have?

Yeah, this ^ ^. I'm kind of shocked to see someone asking about style - that's really a personal preference. Worry about how well your outerwear stands up to wind/water, the features of the pants, how durable they are, etc. Then get whatever color you like out of what's available. Personally I think most of what you posted is ass awful (the red stuff is okay, but otherwise icon13.gif), but I'm not the one wearing them.

small usually stops at 31" waist; large usually starts at 34" waist and 40" chest.

Is the orange stuff ugly too?

I'm like a 31-32" waist and 36" chest.  I'm 5'10", 120 lbs.

Department of Goods releases 50% coupon from time to time. I don`t think you are gonna see any soon, since they had on valid until 07/05. Maybe for labor day weekend now, I don`t know.

Hard to believe Backcountry is gonna have something like this. Some of their stuff is also available at Department of Goods, same price. Now if you get the same kind of deal nobody is going to buy stuff on DoG because of the return policy offered by Backcountry.

I agree with JoeUT, you probably should pay more attention to how your gear is gonna perform. Then if you are satisfied with the performance it`s gonna give you your best bet for a nice looking combo is to go with the same band/model/line for both jacket and pants.

Yeah, sounds like you just *might* fit into 'small' if it is styled for snowboarders - but you probably won't fit into athletic or trim-fit small like the Spyder (the Salomon you linked to has that rep also).

Yeah. the orange stuff is pretty UGLI - a sled driver might get away with it, but for skiers - ugh.

So if I want it kind of baggy, would the Spyder or Salomon stuff be okay in large (since you said those run small)?

I don't think so,  would be the wrong kind of baggy, with tight spots exactly where you want it loose, and flapping like a tent elsewhere.

Another piece of advice: You can't guarantee fit on a website or forum. Use the sizing chart guidelines; order from a place that has a liberal return policy (Backcountry is quite possibly the best in that regard); try the clothes on; and return/exchange if they don't fit. Or go to a physical retailer where you can try them on first.

Keep in mind that  you will be wearing base layer(s) underneath the pants.   Go bigger if on the bubble.

He means on the thin,  indeed diaphanous,  boundary between sizes.     Diaphanous in the sense that any firm statement of size is trivially popped by the next garment trial.

Ahh so if I'm like in between sizes, it's better to go bigger, I see :)

Okay guys! I found a seemingly awesome deal on a POC Skull Light Helmet White in Medium.  It's $50.  Should I get it?  Also, how do I measure my head size for the helmet?

The reason that I'm thinking of getting this one is because RealSkiers.com recommends the Skull X, but these seem similar and it's such a good price...

If I end up getting this helmet, then I'll go for the red Spyder Rival and the white Spyder Rover pants because that would look sick altogether.

Is this the joke post of the summer ? Who cares about " good skiing style" ?   Get gear that fits and is appropriate for the weather and conditions where you ski.

Why? Style is important...
Are you saying if I gave you a hot pink/lime green plad jacket that fit very well and worked for you, you would wear it, despite the extreme ugliness? Style isn't important to you at all?

Style is way down the list of what is actually important.  If you can ski like Glen Plake or Bode Miller, nobody will give a rat's behind what you're wearing.  Most important is how well you ski.  Second is the quality and durability of what you're wearing.  Probably tied for second is how well it fits.  Third is style.  By the time you take care of the first three, especially the first one, style is decided.    If you want to just worry about style, be prepared to spend a lot of money at least every other season.  I'll just stick with my canary yellow Patagonia Powder Bowl jacket, and two pair of black shell pants, Patagonia and Outdoor Research.  It's all pretty much bombproof, will last me for several more years and I don't look like a little kid wearing my dad's clothes.

/\/\/\ What he said.

Would you rather ski like Glen Plake or look like him.  I don't think you could handle the hair cut biggrin.gif

Speaking as someone that needs his wife to check to make sure his shirt matches his pants each morning, if you have to ask what is stylish, you don't have any.

Last summer I bought a ski jacket after months of research on features, durability and reviews.  Once I narrowed it down to a short list of one or two, I had to pick the color.  I asked my 14 y/o daughter if she would still sit with me on the lift if I was wearing it.  She said yes so I bought it.  That's the limit of my concern about style; don't embarrass your kids.  I do spend a bit of time chasing a good price/value too.  That's part of the fun/hunt.

The jacket is a Helly Hansen Stoneham and is incredible.  Not much flash but I don't much care for that.  And it matches my helmet smile.gif

The good news is, jackets that are made well usually have at least "enough" style.  After all, manufacturers don't want to spend all that effort to make a good jacket for no one to buy it because it's ugly.

I wouldn't wear a pink jacket but it is also very unlikely that I would wear any of the jackets you posted in your first couple posts either.

There's no way that I would wear that jacket. It would really make me look lame and that color combination clashes with my
orange boots.
