Hmmmm...

Definitely Russia.  Korea sounds like fun.

TAIWAN might be very interesting.  There's a freaking 12,966-foot mountain in Taiwan:

Winter snow stays as late as April or May on the slopes of Taiwan's highest peak, Jade Mountain, which is also known as the "snowy mountain of the tropics." (Photo by Sie Sin-tian)

But # 1 on my bucket list - thanks to Spindrift and this thread - is I want to go heli-skiing and skin-skiing in Iceland.  Not only does the country fascinate me, the scenery is spectacular and I can go salmon, char, and trout fishing while I'm there.  Also, if you watch the movie "Prometheus", how could you NOT want to go visit Iceland?

# 2 on my list is to spend the last two weeks of March and the first two weeks of April in some small town in the Italian Alps.  I know that the skiing may not be all that great, but everything else would be amazing.

I probably have a lot more in the way of gear or people related experiences than I do in the way of location related experiences I would like to pursue.

I have never skied..... but would like to try:

Olin Mark IV Comps

The Ski of any vintage

Indoors

And then there also all the Bears I haven't skied with yet (yep, everyone here is included in that "would love to" list) in addition to those more famous skilebrities like Plake, Bode, Mahres, Vonn, Billy Kidd, etc..

my short-term bucket list modus operandi has always been to ski somewhere new each season. This can either be a resort or a new area of B/C. In terms of the latter, it can also be a new line in a an area I've already visited. I've been able to maintain that for the past several seasons. Just being able to ski one new place a year is exciting, whether it's a podunk resort in CO or a hike-to-chute in the Sierra.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

But after thinking for a minute, an "other" experience I'd put on my bucket list is the idea of living near a single good US ski area for a whole winter and logging about 100 ski days between Nov and May.  Maybe become an ambassador and just hanging out on the mountain experiencing good days and not so good days, taking in the whole season-long experience.  This would be the antidote to a life previously spent primarily as a weekend warrior recreational skier.

That's a good one.  Just being at one place for the entire season and riding the ebbs and flows of good days and bad days from season opening to close.  Skiing when you feel like it and not skiing when you don't.  That sounds good.

On the ski travel bucket list a few things still remain:

  • Japan to experience that nearly 1,000 inches of a powder in a good season
  • South America during our summer
  • Heli-skiing AK
  • Cat skiing in BC
  • More time in the Alps for the authenticity of its villages and ski experience
  • One really exotic ski trip like Russia, or Antartica
  • More great POW turns with good friends

Most excellent list right there, any one of those would be epic.  More than one?  As my 6 year old would say, "Epic-er!"  biggrin.gif

In my 40+ years of skiing I have been fortunate to have already skied many of other folks bucket list destinations.  What is left for me is:

#1 I want to go Heli Skiing.  I really don't care where, just somewhere awesome.  And I need to do it soon while I can still ski at a high level.  I have told my wife I would like to do it for my 60th birthday in 2 years.  I need to make up for when I turned down the chance to go Heli Skiing near Vail back in 77 for the huge sum of $50 when I was invited to go along with a scouting trip for an upstart Heli Ski operation.  I passed as I wasn't confident enough in my abilities at that time.

#2  I would like to ski in the summer in the southern hemisphere.  I know Chili or Argentina has better skiing but for some reason I would prefer to ski in New Zealand then stay for a while to do some sight seeing in that awesome country.

#3  Other - To ski with my grandchildren who haven't been born yet.  My daughter had better get started soon.  First step is to get through her wedding this Sept.  Babies should follow soon there after.

I started skiing in Austria 40 years ago.  Would like to experience it again but only a short visit (just got back from there, trip was sort of a disaster, long story).  I then skied all over the US for the next 40 years.  Currently old enough to enjoy just being able to get up in the AM, drive to resort where my stuff is all in a locker (no lugging) and experience whatever the day has to offer.  There is plenty for me here, it's beautiful, I have friends to meet up with, and every day is different.  Still haven't hit every inch of the mountain anyway.  So, no real bucket list for skiing.  I'm sort of IN the bucket.  Or about to kick it.

I chose Heliskiing in BC but would be happy with Cat skiing

To get to ski another season.

One thing on the bucket list is skiing a "flight" of skis in one day, representing everything I've skied on for the past 52 years.  This includes crappy wooden skis with bear trap bindings, Rossi Allais Major and Strato 102, Spalding Sideral, Elan 08, Dynamic VR 17 (cracked edges) and 27 (SL, GS), etc. right on up to my current Ski Logik and Stockli models.

In addition to the where that's on my skiing Bucket List, it occurs to me there's also a couple of whats.

For instance, at the risk of fostering near-heresy hereabouts, I'd like to learn how to Snowboard.  I don't want to take it up or anything, but I think it would be cool to know "how the other half lives," so to speak.  I'm determined to take a lesson or two at some point just to see what it's all about.

I'd also really like to learn how to Tele.  Again, I don't want to become a regular Tele-Skier; I just think it would be cool to learn.  As I understand it, however, one is required to have a beard before being allowed to Tele, and since I'm hopelessly clean-shaven, I may be out of luck with respect to that goal.  frown.gif

Went to Courmayeur, Italy four years ago - scenery was spectacular!

My personal bucket list would have to include the Matterhorn and Ski Dubai.

Most of the above would be great for me, so I'll list in order of preference/likelihood of happening:

South America - expect to check this off in August
Europe - Alps
Heli
Japan

Alps/SouthAmerica/BC heli

Hoping to cross off the Alps next season.

Really want to cat-ski, not heli, in BC (don't like helicopters) and figure there's a decent chance I'll get to that before too much longer.

South America is going to be a stretch, but I'll live in hope.

I was fortunate enough to ski a day with Phil & TC this past season (thanks again, you two lovebirds), and glad to hook up with any of you bucketeers who make it to Japan.

Jim, we enjoyed spending time with you.  Come back any time.

South America, the Alps, New Zealand, Japan, and Alaska are probably at the top of my list.

Started skiing last year so I have a lot of exploring to do but my top list at the moment would be something like this:

1. Alps - especially France & Austria

2. Japan

3. New Zealand

4. Heliskiing in BC

5. Utah

Already did Whistler which was number 1 on my list and Mon Tremblant & Mont-Sainte-Anne.... am from vertically challenged Ontario.

I'm lucky enough to have taught skiing on five of the continents, love to ski the other two, I actually have been very close to the ski resort in Morocco, but just a month too late.

Other than that, heli skiing AK whilst I am still young and good enough to ski some serious lines.

Mt Rehapahau ( i'm sure it's not spelt correctly)

Has the only Lifted Summer skiing i know of in the southern hemisphere.

I rode their on Boxing day 2001? ( i think it was 2001, it was the year of the tsunami)

Snow was actually pretty good, and you can even hike the ridge for fresh tracks :)

i would highly reccomend it :)

Nice!!! Which mountain? Is this a private trip or a tour? Can't wait to get the trip report.

Struth, it's spelled 'Ruapehu'. They didn't have summer skiing when I was there. I did get one day in the winter where we skied in the morning, then played golf and got a bit of waterskiing in the afternoon! This was in late September. South Island skiing is better but nice to be close to Lake Taupo.

Welcome to a fellow flatlander! I live in Toronto, have only skied one day in Ontario the last two years - but I've gotten 25 days in Whistler...

This is a 20 day trip with Skip Novak (Pelagic Charters).

My home mountain is Ruapehu. great skiing, poor facilities, and even worse weather. It gets very hot late season, and we often finish skiing with two metres of snow left. Sometimes they open at Christmas for a bit of a joke,

I checked one off my bucket list--ski in the Alps--this year (Chamonix/Grands Montets), but it was only a day and whetted my appetite for more. Definitely need to go back.

Spending the entire season next to a good ski area worth getting a season pass for is on the list. Maybe I should do that for my 50 1/2 birthday instead of South America for my 50th.

Heli skiing would be great, but I need to get better at powder. Feel like I should do a cat ski trip first.

Finally, getting all of my kids to Colorado, Utah and/or Tahoe so they can experience some good ski areas is high on the list.

Other: Skiing with nolo, of course!

I've hiked and skied Diamond Peaks above Cameron Pass in Colorado on July 3. I've skied A-Basin after Summer Solstice.  Does either of those count as summer skiing?
