Indeed great news Mike.
I will say I'm really happy for Timmy. Betsy and I had a wonderful introduction to him at the team bus last season. He is an outstanding guy...went out of his way to introduce us to the team (including the amazing Peter Sagan). Great to see a guy like that win out. And was he a horse at the Tour De Suisse...he was pulling the entire peloton (loading up for Sagan) every time the camera was on front.
I did hear that Tim is NOT on for the TdF?! OLY focus I guess...
BTW...
A friend of mine (and Boulder resident) Rory Sutherland (UnitedHealthCare Pro Cycling) just claimed the Yellow Jersey Top Podium step at the just completed Tour De Beauce. A great win for him. You'll see Rory at the 2012 USAProCC (he took 10th place last year). Another guy like Timmy who credits team first.

Or is this simply because "others" will NOT be making the trip this year?
Are we sending our best or the best we can?

Well, the best that aren't involved somehow in LA's doping allegations. New blood will be good for US cycling. Great to see a Phinney again!

Say what you will about Leipheimer, Hincappie, Zabriske, et. al. Taylor Phinney is a coming force in international pro cycling. Should he have displaced Zabriske for the TT spot? That's a tough one. One, the experience; the other, the youth, talent, and (possibly) future of TT in American cycling. And it isn't as if Phinney hasn't been to the Olympics. He'd have been there in any case had they not eliminated the Individual Pursuit.
Tejay is emerging as the next generation contender for the big stage races. Timmy is the National Road Champ. And Horner? He probably should've been selected several times in the past. His performance last season and in this year's ToC certainly suggest he should be considered.
My bet is that the decisions of Leipheimer, Hincappie, Vande Velde and Zabriske to ask not be considered has more to do with their participation in the TdF than does their past association with LA. After all, the Olympics start just 10 days after the TdF. And none of them are spring chickens.

Yeah, I'm sure the fact that all of them rode for LA during the years in question had nothing to do with it at all.....

Might, or might not. One can dwell on a lot of negativity. Or one can look at the positive side of life. We've got a great group of athletes going to the Olympics. Would the selection committee have made a different decision had Leipheimer, Hincappie, Vande Velde, and Zabriske not withdrawn their names? We'll never know. And, arguably, they would've reached the same selections anyway.
Why dwell on LA? Everyone here knows your opinion of him, no need to
