Skiing Crystal May 26th, 2012

Who says this was the worst snow year in 20 years?  Here in the PNW there is still skiing, although the talk is the snow is melting fast so they will probably be open for only two more weekends, until the second week of June.  I got an new camera lens and this seemed like a good time to try it out.

As you would expect, the snow was slushy but it still had a firm base underneath it.  The north facing slopes even had some ice on them.  Not a perfect sunny day but enough so that shorts and short sleeves weren't uncommon.  There were only two of the upper slope chairs running.  You could still ski all the way to the bottom, but I don't know how long that's going to last.

Parking in dirt and mud instead of snow.  Several wearing shorts.  Spirits were high.

Still no snow, but I'm getting closer...

Pretty short line for getting on the gondola.

Some decided to delay their skiing by basking in the sun.  The temperature reached somewhere in the 50's.  It was warm when the sun was out but cool when the clouds rolled through.

The moguls were especially fun today.  Very forgiving.

Back at the bottom they made a small snow bridge so you can still end up close to the lodge.

Thanks for sharing.

That's for the photo.  I hoping my son will be station in Everett after this deployment.

How is the ski school at Crystal?  Do there coaches/instructors get a lot of work?

Very nice!

We have also been skiing at Crystal Mountain this weekend. There is some fun terrain still open, and the weather has been pretty nice:

Nice!  Much better weather than last Sunday. Good to see they replenished the band of snow to the base.. it was getting pretty thin.

Looks like the slopes below REX really filled in and smoothed out with the new snow?

hank,

Can't comment on the ski school at Crystal, but I think they employ a lot of people.  From Everett, Stevens is the closest resort.  The other resorts to consider from Everett are Baker and the 4 at Snoqualmie Pass.  Crystal is in a class by itself in WA because of its size.  If your son does go to Everett just have him ask on EpicSki about the resorts I mentioned and about instructing and I'm sure he will get a lot of good information.

I skied Crystal Sunday 5/27/12.  Pretty much same conditions as described by bert; I'm not posting any pics because they pretty much look the same.   It was surprisingly sunny in the morning, but after lunch the clouds moved in.  Green Valley was somewhat protected from the fog, but my last run of the day down Ferk's was the worst visibility I have ever seen at Crystal.  Rather than ski down to the bottom I decided to take REX to the top and download on the gondola.

The snowpack was pretty good at Green Valley, however Middle Ferks had a big bare patch at the top and lots of bare patches off to the side.  Sunnyside was ever more spotty.   I was able to ski all the way down to the bottom down to the base lodge, that bridge wasn't too long a stretch.  It was kind of weird to have those wide slopes on the bottom with no virtually one on them, since most people were up top at Green Valley, or lapping REX.

Crystal's website states they will be open two more weekends, just the gondola and Green Valley.  I'm thinking we should have an Epic locals  meet up on the last day, June 10th.

Decided not to join my wife for the wedding of one of her friends on the 19th of May since Crystal was only open Saturday and Sunday. I would have had a great time it looks like.

Looks like REX will run again this weekend, and it may not be the last day for skiing yet!

There's a good chance I'll be up at Crystal on Sunday (6/10), but might tour off Chinook Pass instead. Anyone headed up to either?

Hey Mike, I'm planning to ski Crystal on the 10th.   I'll be turning 50 on June 13th, so what better way to celebrate than skiing?

REX was indeed running this past weekend, but they were saying yesterday that it was going to be the last day for it; next weekend will probably just be Green Valley.  I won't be able to make it up next weekend at all, but have fun if you get up there!

I think they said REX will run next weekend in a FB post.

You're right, I just saw that. I guessed they changed their minds, that's great. REX keeps a ton more terrain open.
