What, no football (soccer) fans? - Page 10

I'd be in.  I've been wanting to try this out for a while now, but have never really done it.  Sounds interesting.

First time around at trying to follow Olympic Soccer for me.  Just now figuring out that all but 3 players had to be U-23.  Thinking that would be a HUGE handicap to the US if those rules also applied to basketball.

The NBA is pushing to make it that way for 2016.

Naw, I don't do fantasy sports, just occasional bracket challenges.

Well the football discussions from the Olympics ended up in the Summer Olympics thread, so just let it be said congrats to the US Women on a hard earned gold. That said it's time to move on to the World Cup.

Two exciting friendlies today (actually a bunch of friendlies, but two I would like to watch (both on ESPN2 and 3). Argentina v Germany at 2:30 PM and US v Mexico at 8 PM. The US beating Mexico would be a huge upset, should be a great match at the Azteca.

And in other news its now official that Robin van Persie is a Red Devil. The Gunners sold him to Man U for 24 million pounds. Can't wait to see what him and Rooney working together can do. Talk about a one two tandem. It's also quite a deal that Arsenal sold such a talented player to their rivals. This would be like the Yankees trading Jeter to the BoSox.

Scored a gold Nike US Soccer keeper jersey #1 at The Salvation Army yesterday for $2.99.  It looks to be from about 1998 (small US Soccer logo in center).  Still works as Solo and Howard both wear #1 currentlybiggrin.gif

As for the game, it appears that Germany didn't show up.  They're lucky it isn't already 4 nil or worse right now..

GOOOOAAAALLLLL!!!!! Is the US going to win their first ever game at the Azteca? And without Dempsey and Altidore up front trying to put balls on frame. This would be a huge upset if the US can hold on for another 5' plus stoppage to hang on for dear life.

Denied again by Howard!   Hang on baby!

Wow. What an upset.

That was pretty sweet. I didn't think they had a chance.

Without a doubt that was the best game I've ever seen Howard play.

I'll keep this out of the Olympics thread (where it started), but on the subjectivity of handling ... my daughter scored a goal with her arm on Saturday, and it was allowed. So of course I thought of that discussion. Her team had a corner kick, and she was jockeying for position in the 6-yd box. I could see her wrapping her arms around herself, to keep them down, and I swear it looked like she shouldered the ball, but I wasn't sure. Goal counted.

After the game, I asked, "What did you score with, your hip?" and she said, "Arm/shoulder." Actually ... the exchange was by text, which was what was so funny ... she said,

"Thanks, the goalie was pissed! She was like are you not going to call that??? And he goes do you not know how to catch?? And she goes, I DID, but obviously you can't see and she was going off on him and she definitely should have gotten a yellow card!!!"

Anyway, I'm laughing at the referee's reply to the goalie "Do you not know how to catch?", but I guess I shouldn't. DD said she was being held from behind, which is why she couldn't head the ball (which is what she was trying to do). I'm pretty sure scoring off a corner with your arm -- even if wrapped around your body -- is "hand to ball," but if the referee saw that she was being held and unable to get forward to head, maybe he just split the difference and let the goal stand.

They lost the game, so it didn't matter in the end. Otherwise he wasn't a bad ref, kind of normal. Missed  a few, got a few right ... Better than most.

Some surprising scores today, I guess at least my Arsenal picked up a point.

Wth happened w/ Deuce, what was he thinking.  He has been my favortite US players since his NE days, but I never realized he was a freaking diva.  Fulham ran up the score on Norwich today.  Him playing (and probably scoring one or two) would have only helped his cause.

RVP starting on the bench frown.gif I want to see him and Rooney together! (My sympathies CaliSki)

A couple of great saves from both goalies. De Gea in particular has surprised me, never been a big fan of him, maybe he's finally getting used to football at this level.

Just saw the MU v. Everton score.  Any time one of the bigger teams lose it's a good thing for the Great Arsenal.  On the other hand it's said to see that their "project" wasn't good enough to help yet another big club get off to a good start.

Did you guys start the fantasy league?  I received the invite but never signed up, is it too late?
