I'll be back on ski's this weekend, almost exactly one month from getting a fasciotomy on my right calf.

Anyone going to Crystal this weekend? I'll be up there on Sunday on the way back home... staying in the fine 'dorm' lodging.

Typical Spring skiing @ Bachelor. Hard in the AM (SL skis) and softening up (RR skis) around 11AM. Skiing frozen suncups was actually better than the groom because of the lack of experienced cat operators this year. Still having issues trying to carve a direct fall line on the steeps with frozen suncups. Work on it tomorrow, maybe Dchan could give me a few pointers..

Blackcomb tomorrow hopefully a sunny warm day, if so will try for the "Full Vancouver." ski in am water ski in pm.

Last weekend, we could not ski at Alyeska because there was 4 feet of heavy new snow and the avalanche danger was too great. If it had been February, the resort would have bombed the heck out of everything and we'd have skied on. But not in May.

So, it was a great pleasure to be able to ski again today.

Thanks,

Even with all that snow, May 28th will be the last day of skiing.

last day of season for me. Was a very good day. As always a fun drive up the Sea to Sky. Still lots of snow left, you can still ski to the village although the last 1/2 k or  so has only one run and its just a ski out through bear territory.  The alpine still  has good coverage see photos (I hope). Tried for the "full Vancouver" but on arrival home the first mate (and needed driver) was not there so no go.may 2012 094.jpgwas out  so didn't go.may 2012 085.jpgmay 2012 088.jpg

The Cinco party at Alpental is an old favorite - always a good time!  Here's a shot from the backcountry near Big Sky this weekend.  We'll be skiing in Montana through July despite the lower-than-average year

Had a great day on Hood Saturday. Endless corn, and no traffic.

Great day at Sunshine Village today (Monday).  4,300 people on the mountain (buncha die-hards).... but, unfortunately, all good things must come to an end and that's the end of my season.  It's on to some serious mountain biking for the next six months.

Things at Mammoth are burning out fast. But still lots of good skiing up top. Had a great last weekend of lift-served.

Crystal Mt on Sunday. Rain started just as the lifts began turning in the morning. Took a bit to convince myself it was worthwhile, but in the end had a good day.

Hey Mike, I would've met you there but had family obligations.  I think I'm starting to go through withdrawals; I haven't been skiing the last two weekends.   I am not prepared for the inevitable end of my ski season.

The forecast for this week at Crystal is snow showers, maybe with some rain showers.  I might get one or two days at Crystal over Memorial Day weekend, then with any luck will celebrate my 50th birthday skiing (officially June 13, but hoping to ski the weekend before/after).

nice! Love to see skiing in shorts.  Snow looks pretty good?

^I managed to convince Phil to meet me at Mt. Rose summit despite windejo conditions in Reno (it was decidedly non-windy in Truckee, but when I connected with him on Rose it was a different scenario. Thankfully the north facing slope we skied was protected from the wind).

Snow was variable.

Our first lap was seriously sun-cupped and runneled, the most wonky slope I've skied thus far in the early hiking/patch skiing season.

Our second and third runs were pretty creamy.

Pitch was nice and the lack of lift lines and gapers was a bonus.

Oh yeah, we were able to ski down to the truck/car.

The view was kinda cool, too and having folks look at us in amazement whilst we sipped cold ones in the parking lot apres was equally cool.

I climbed Carlton Ridge (near Lolo Peak) to get in some turns yesterday, it snowed.

Alyeska wrapped up a great season today (May 28th), still having a 156" base at the top.

We skied Friday through Monday (all the days it was open) this week, mostly in bottomless corn.

May still get to ski in the Beartooth Mountains in MT if there is any snow when we visit down there in June.

Hats off to all of you who are still out there in the backcountry.

The recent storm kept the pass closed this past weekend. It snowed 7 inches in Red Lodge at 5500 feet (almost three thousand vertical feet lower than the bottom of the headwalls. In recent years, this time of year has seen some ridiculously big snowfall thereabouts. I hear that some locals estimate four feet up top out of the latest storm cycle. There will be plenty of snow.

Indeed! My wife and I spent Saturday skiing Red Lodge. Great spring snow down below. We're planning on heading back up there again this upcoming weekend to hit up the pass. Hope the highway's open! Can't wait! Was pretty epic last year.

Just got back from 4 days @ Mt. Lassen.

Friday evening I hiked/skied Diamond Peak.

Saturday I hiked/skied Ski Heil Peak three times.

Sunday I summited Mt. Lassen proper and skied down.

Monday I hiked/skied Ski Heil Peak two times.

On the drive out from Truckee on Friday afternoon it was snowing @ 5400 feet along Hwy 89. It snowed, rained, hailed, and graupled Friday night at Mt. Lassen. Did the same all day Saturday and as a result we enjoyed some sweet ball-bearing over corn snow slickness that was hero snow beyond hero snow. Sunday got a bit sludgier in the afternoon and the same for Monday, but for $10 and no lift lines it was a super score.

Saturday on the ID/MT border:

Just skied 3 days at Mammoth, actually skied 3 inches of powder up top on Sunday!!!  The cat walk around the back way to scottys had over a foot!  Anyways Mammoth was GIVING away it's demos,  I picked up a pair of 2012 Gotama's in super good condition for $350 with bindings and poles!  Then got a pair of Salomon Impact 100's for $125!!!!!  yep boots and bindings for $475.   They had such a terrible year they were liquidating everything on the last day!
