For those suffering Snow Deprivation Syndrome, here's a little vid from Mt Hotham in sunny Australia

I'm a little worried. We're now in the peak season, and the snow at Mt Buller is suffering from rain, rain and more rain. Even worse, the ol timers  believe that Squaw's season mimics ours. [gulp]

I had planned on hiking and skiing Mount Rainier for a couple of weeks since Crystal Mountain closed July 1st. But we got skunked by rain, then fog for the next three weeks that lined up with the weekends. Things finally came together yesterday on Friday.  Predictably, most of the ski crew bailed and snowboarder Jonathan and I ended up going. Got to the Paradise parking lot by 8 am and we began hiking up the Muir snowfield. It's a long haul with skis and boots in your backpack from 5,400 feet and we made it up to 9,000 feet just under Anvil rock in three hours. The Muir snowfield was in terrible shape, with runnels and suncups, and lots of bootpack holes. We watched a couple of skiers come down as we ascended, and they were in survival mode. Trip reports from Turns All Year suggested that the Paradise Glacier, located east/skier's left of the Muir Snowfield was in much better shape. We crossed a rock island and scoped out the glacier, it looked great. Nice views of Mount Adams, St. Helens, and Hood down in Oregon. After lunch and a couple of beers, we headed down. We had to avoid a few crevasses no problems. The melt out resulted in sections that were sketchy, as they were so steep we couldn't see if there were rock bands below us, so we played it safe and did a carry over about 100 yards of rock.  Then we were able to drop in, and somehow found a line (it won't be there in 2-3 days) that came around a waterfall. I was balking, but Jonathan coached me down and it was no problem. What's an adventure without some heart-pounding moments? We ended up hiking down a mile back to the Paradise Lodge parking lot. I always love the comments from the confused tourists "Do they have skiing here? Did you ski from the top of the mountain?" Yes we didrolleyes.gif was the answer...

Lots less snow than last year when we did Nisqually chutes and skied to the car. However, the snow quality was really great, even smooth with minimal sun cupping. It was the best hike/ski experience ever for me. Now the wait for November, sigh.

Last run of 2011-2012 season, we skied down looker's left of the waterfall (snow patch in very upper left-hand corner)

Oh, and I forgot to bring my camera too, so no I don't have any pics of our ski day. This is the best I can do:

Ruapeho's two areas are excellent, with slopeside motels (like Snotel) and the Chateau and club lodging.

It's not if you ski still. It's if you're season is still going on.

FWIW My last day of the season was saturday. Felt good to be back on snow. Though i don't think my feet/ankles enjoy the performance fit anymore after surgery.

After skiing Hidden Glacier we headed over to Jack's Glacier.

If you look closely you can see dookey67 on the right.

Dookey67 on edge...

...close to the edge...

...even closer...

Fortunately he didn't go over. However, next we went under...

Definitely a fun adventure. You can see more at patchskiing.com

Definitely bring your skis.

Yeah, I think I recognize The Nipple. It sure looks strange without snow though.

Glad you were able to get out and enjoy some summer skiing on the Kenai. Raining and colder temps at the moment, could be some new powder up there when it clears, hmmm.
