Who Is Still Skiing and Where? - Page 5

A day on Bald Mountain (Baldy)

The day started at 6:00 driving up to the gate on French Gulch Road. We unloaded our bikes and continued another couple miles by bike. We started hiking at the next gate. We scrambled through the trees and rested above treeline. From there we were walking some on snow, some on rocks and earth. When we reached the main run, we put our boots on and kicked our way up.

There was from 2 - 6 inches of sun softened snow on top of hard snow and blue ice. In some places (near rocks) we postholed. Skiing down was very nice. The soft snow wasn't very supportive so our turns were mostly skidded as it peeled away.

All in all a very pleasant day as the winds were light and the clouds didn't build up until we were on the descent.

I wouldn't be surprised to see St Marys glacier melt completely out by summers end.....  It has come close about 12 years ago, but never melted completely out.

Hard to say about St. Mary's.  Interestingly, the glaciers in Colorado have been expanding over the past decade or two, according to research at CU reported last year.

And Now For Something Completely Different....

Went skiing today at the Red Lodge International Ski Camp.

Despite the name, it is open to anyone who has $45 and wants to ski.

This is a 2 poma lift operation in the Beartooth Mountains on the Wyoming/Montana border.

It opens each Memorial Day weekend and stays open until the snow goes around the 4th of July.

Here is my wife standing in front of the spacious main lodge.

IMGP1361.jpg

It is an upside-down ski area.

One skis from the top down to the lifts.

IMGP1365.jpg

This is the view looking down on the lifts.

IMGP1364.jpg

It is not much, as ski areas go.

But it open daily, the people are very nice and it is a lot of fun.

I would recommend it to anyone visiting the Yellowstone area before the 4th of July.

Nice! Snow levels not quite up with last year's but pretty good:

I am taking my daughter up there for the race camp next week.

Just skied 8 different patches up on/around Hiram Peak down Highlands Lakes area. Snow was a mixed bag of thudge (thick sludge), creamed corn, soft serve, Philly (cream cheese), and cookie crisp. 'Twas a good day.

great stoke for a gloomy, rainy EC morning. The skiing at red lodge looks pretty damn fine to me. Some fun looking terrain. Glad you are getting on that

Dookie, great stuff too man, Happy birthday to you!

"The Blaze" - Blaze Mountain, Spanish Peaks, MT.  June 9, 2012, snowed 1" of fresh on top of 2000' vertical of perfect corn.  Quite possibly the best day I've ever had skiing in June (aside from the 34 degree runoff we had to cross barefoot).

Great shots!  If you're in the area a while also check out the Gardner Headwall and Rock Creek headwall at the pass - Park at the top, hike a few minutes, ski to the bottom and hitch-hike back up!  and it's free!

I got back from Beartooth on Saturday night, I haven't finished sorting through and editing the pictures I took, so my epic trip report remains in the box.

I skied Rock Creek Headwall on Friday and Saturday, but on Saturday, I had to climb it to ski it, because the pass was closed. We could hear them bombing for avy control on Saturday.

1. Thanks Finndog.

2. Damn, looks like MT is the place to be for summer skiing. I'm in San Francisco for the month of June making the final move to the mountains after, so I'm out for patch skiing until July, but I know Tahoe is getting thin. Stev hit up "The Nipple" on Sunday out Blue Lakes Road, off of Hwy 88 (Eastside of Carson Pass area). The got some good corn and some turns, but again it's going to be one of those summers where finding the goods is half the adventure.

Just got back from Timberline(Mt.Hood,Or.) Lots of camps and they were all on the groom. So as it soften we hiked up above Palmer chair and traversed over to lookers left to ski some smooth, soft corn snow. Must of made 6-8 runs top to bottom at a high rate of speed. By noon we were spent and headed to the Ramshead bar in the rustic lodge. What a great day with friends. All of the racers and riders were very professional and friendly, which makes the experience all the better. Looks like another trip planned in a few weeks. Next time pictures.

Please. Looking forward to seeing them.

Never skied at Hood.

Skied Crystal mtn Saturday. 6" of fresh on June 9th. No pics due to a pea soup visibility but great snow. Rainier express still running so bear pits and frontside fun will be taking place next weekend. Think we will make it till July.

Wow, that's the polar opposite of what I experienced there a few years ago when I skied with my Mom up there, the racer kids were aggressive in trying to cut in line. Nevertheless, I'm planning on skiing Hood at some point this summer, with my lady friend, who lives in Oregon.

I skied last weekend. 2 months after the resort closed.

Classic Big White out. With fog and high winds. Didn't take much pictures.

Pretty nice down at the lake this time of year too. June is a good month for all types of recreation.

As Lex posted, Crystal Mt. is still open, got some new snow this week.  They still have enough snow to keep Rainier Express open one more week, and Green Valley for a few weeks more.   Sunday 6/10 at 8:30am to about 10am was beautiful snow, nice and chalky and smooth on Green Valley,  a bit sketchier on the Rainier Express side with lots of exposed rocks and bare patches on Sunnyside, Bear Pits and Middle Ferks.  By 10:30 the snow was pretty sticky, by 11:30 like glue in the flats, although steeper slopes like Grubstake softened up nicely.  Some of my best turns were on West Face above the bottom of the Green Valley lift, with great views of people taking turns on the airbag.

I skied at Crystal Mountain Washington today.  I went with my wife and kids for father's day.  It was a blast for me and my son, but the conditions were a bit too challenging for my 4 year old girls.  They had to play in the snow with Mom.  (I would have never gotten away with that move on any other day....)  Even though there were plenty of bare patches on the lower parts of the runs it was remarkably good for the middle of June!  I don't expect them to stay open for much longer - there were several bottlenecks where the snow was only 10 yards wide.

Thanks for the report, Martin.

I just got done with my followup appointment with the doc after my toe surgery. The bones are healing great and I have been cleared to ski on June 30. Woohoo!

Any chance you (or any other Epicistas) will be skiing Beartooth on June 30 or July 1?

No plans to be there that weekend, Bob - good luck, and enjoy!

That video is stoopid cool.  I wish the new vimeo platform was easier to embed.

That video IS pretty stoopid cool.  Just a TINY bit too much of a railed check going off that second block.  eek.gif

Let's see if I can embed it:

Thanks for the nice thoughts, Martin, Seg, and Trek.  I am probably NOT going to go off that cornice, although I'm sure that a video of me doing that would be similarly entertaining.

The doc was pretty firm about how he's only letting me do the skiing thing if I promise to just get my turns done and don't get carried away.  I've got to admit, though, that the foot feels pretty darned good and it's going to be hard for me to continue being a "good patient" for very much longer.

oh man, make me want to go up there and hit it a few times to figure it out!    Definitely a little bit more air on the first drop,,,   Love the steep landing!

Hmmmm......I was at Rock Creek Headwall on the 9th, and heard a number of bombs go off (high winds and new snowfall had closed the pass, someone said it had to do with wind loading and resultant avy danger). I imagine that chunk was broken off that day.
