Who Is Still Skiing and Where?

I know this has been a tough year for many resorts. But I was wondering who is still skiing and where.

Here in AK, April brings us some of the nicest combination of weather and skiing that we will see.

These are some photos taken at Alyeska today (4/24/12). Corn abounds.

This is the last week for everyday operation. Then it goes to weekends through June 1st.

If anyone is traveling to AK before June, it is worth checking out.

So where else is anyone still skiing?

Backcountry skiing will continue for months in many places. Today I skied the bc behind Taos Ski Valley. Still plenty of snow there, should last 'till May, then there's Colorado and Wyoming bc.

Just got back from a trip to Snowbird. It was very warm for late April and got very slushy and sticky by noon or one. The snow cover is getting thin in spots and they will be doing good to stay open until mid-May, compared to July 4th last year. I will probably try to make one more trip.

Last weekend the wife and I climbed up and skied the Silverton Mountain heli terrain across the valley from the lift serviced area, since it is now closed. Super smooth velvety corn in the sun.  Weekend before we hit the reopening of Wolf Creek, which looked like this VVV with 18" of new snow.

I'm not giving up yet.  They have plowed the 4WD road up Ophir Pass to almost 12,000 feet, so access is just getting better.

The fat lady has definitely not sung yet. icon14.gif

Girdwoodguy, great pics of the old playground, thanks.  Hard to beat Spring skiing at Alyeska, enjoy it.

Saturday & Sunday could have been the best corn so far this year.  At Snowbird 1st tram and into Mineral Basin, it was great till about 11, but it was cooked by about 2.  Sunday may have been the end of the season for me though; skied into a hatch of May Flies near the bottom of the tram.  Fish on.

Last weekend of full operation (full-ish) at Squaw and Alpine. Then weekends only at Alpine for two more weeks. Then Mammoth. Then BC.

DUN,

All I can say is Wow.

I did not realize that the Cascades still had that kind of skiing going on. That is great.

I especially liked the shots of the "crowded runs."

I have never understood why people line up for the WROD in October but stay home when Spring hits.

This is a photo of the crowded slopes at Alyeska, taken from the parking lot yesterday.

Oops. I guess I need practice posting photos.

This is the photo I meant to post showing the slopes from the parking lot.

I just got back from a 10 day trip to Lake Louise. Coverage was like mid season and the snow that fell while I was there pushed them to record annual snowfall levels. Mid week there were not enough skiers for the resort to make money. Good turn out of Calgary skiers on the weekends. LL closes May 6. All of the British Columbia interior resorts closed right after Easter for lack of skiers, not lack of snow.

Silver Mountain, Idaho still going on Saturdays. Looks like an inch or three of new is on tap for this weekend.

Crystal Mt went into July (albeit with limited ops) last year. I always ski the last weekend in April in the WA Cascades and there is always great coverage (spring has not typically begun here yet) and in fact there is usually new snow. Freshies are forecast for this week at Crystal and I will be there Saturday.

Despite a nice deep snowpack, I'll be pretty surprised if they make it as long this year.  We've had a really warm April so far compared to last year, and that's going to hurt come June and July.  But, we'll see what the next month of weather brings.  That said, the spring skiing up there has been fantastic the last couple weekends.

Still skiing at Hintertux Glacier (3,250 meters/10,000 + feet) in Southern Austria. Crazy nice day yesterday, tiring myself out on nearly 6,000 vertical feet from highest lift to valley run (which was open), and lots of snow.

Last photo is a friend searching for his skis... both hiding somewhere under the snow. He did find them within about 10 minutes!

Skiing in Melbourne Australia while waiting for snow, which usually starts falling in July.

I just got my prototype dry surface ski based on a patent protected design made.

I can curve on any reasonable smooth surface but will try grass with bigger pneumatic wheels soon.

Check it out and please let me know what you think.

Does riding a stationary bike while watching ski porn count?

Peak 8 at Breck is suppose to be open this weekend...not sure what it will be like as it has been in the 60s most of the week.  My last day on snow was Friday the 20th at Loveland.  Here is a video of my 6 yo cousin at LL on the 18th...her first time seeing snow was Friday April 13.

I'm skiing at Alpenatal next weekend for their big Cinco De Mayo party.  Possibly even if it's raining.

Whistler for the past 5 days, then looks like I'll be back up again for the coming weekend. It was wet but wonderful on Monday.

This is the best time of year for skiing in Banff.  The end of March is when I start to ramp up my ski days, and from this point (late April) on I expect to get in at least 15-20 more ski days.

I wish it was such here, we've lost a lot of snow in the past week; I had to hike down the bottom 500 vertical feet today.

Fiancé and I are at Heavenly this weekend. Might do kirkwood on Sunday depending on how the snow is here tomorrow.
