Provo Canyon Booby Trapped

Ran across an article today from the San Francisco chronicle. Two young men decided it would be cool to build a wilderness shelter in Utah's Provo Canyon and then have a trip wire on either entrance that swung down this nasty widow making device:

Fortunately the ranger who ran across it was ex-military and specially trained in detection of things like this. This time of year there is a lot of hiking there, but I believe some individuals do backcountry skiing there in the winter?

What a stupid thing to do, the idiots are quite lucky that no one was hurt.

According to an article I read, they were able to identify the two people who set up the traps through social networking sites.

Hopefully the justice system is able to give them some common sense.

So not only are these morons dumb enough to set up a booby trap to guard their awesome stick shack, they also talk about it on Facebook. These guys are brain surgeons no doubt about it. Hope they throw the book at them.

Unfortunately without having actually injured anyone the strongest penalty they can pursue I believe was a misdemeanor intent to injure. So probably not much if any jail time.

Sometimes young people do dumb things. Putting them in jail isn't always the best response.
