Printing Threads?? - Possible Solution

I realize many like to read these threads on various devices ranging from a postage stamp phone to a small pizza tablet, but what about the paper option? I know,  how old tech and forest denuding can you get? Well, printers are sold by the boat load, so people are printing something.

The old site had a fairly decent printing option. I have since despaired that we'd ever see even a rudimentary option. It seems to be below the below ground of the totem pole on the importance list. However, I recently came across a site that included a tool for printing that works really well, though I don't know if it would on epic. I do have a modicum of faith that it could work.

Here's the site:

http://www.printfriendly.com/

Here's a site that uses it as a print option-

Try this page: http://www.theopennotebook.com/2011/11/08/john-mcphee/

The nice thing is you can make a pdf of the page. Imagine being able to make pdf's with photos and all real nice looking, of a thread!

hmmmm....could it work?

I've tried it on a thread by posting the url in. It works, but it's a little wonky and doesn't get the captions to photos and the headers to posts etc. right. Maybe that problem is easily solved?

  • Is it easier to use something like this and modify it then try to start from scratch to get a printing option?
  • What's the drawback?

My wife used to do that in Adobe Acrobat for her friends on a Baby Momma type forum.  Folks had a huge thread including all of the history of their pregnancy from planning/conception to breastfeeding.  It often ended up being several dozen pages of posts and they wanted a savable/printable version of the entire thread for posterity.  Anyway, she figured out a way to do it in Acrobat (not just the reader but the write/editing version) and hooked up lots of folks.

Yes, it would be nice to have that capability. We used to have something, now we have none.

Also, to be able to have all the posts of a thread on one scrollable page. I suppose there would be a limit to the pages on one view because some threads like the Retro one are enormous.

Not sure exactly how clean a print out you're looking but I used the normal print function in Google Chrome and sent this thread to my PDF printer (Cute PDF). This is what it came out like:

We're talking about a function that creates a PDF (or MS Doc) of an entire thread consisting of dozens (or even hundreds) of pages without having to open each page manually.  Acrobat Professional used to have that capability.  I'm pretty sure it still does.  As for the limits I suspect that depends on the available resources on the machine when spooling the thread content.

Yes. It wouldn't have to create a pdf, but that's nice. - might as well while we're at it since it's 2012.

tylrwnzl, when we were on vbulletin we had a print capability, or a "view all posts on one page" button. I believe there was a limit.

It used to be relatively easy to print stuff out. In the reinvention of the wheel editor some things have been left out.

the printfriendly website gets rid of the ads and formats it to waste less paper

You could also forget about printing per se and focus on the pdf aspect.

People seem to be indifferent to "printing", but there's a whole world that opens up if you have the ability to view threads on one page.

This isn't all that sophisticated and unusual. It used to be standard.

What if you could create your own thread from an existing one? Eliminate the posts that wander etc, or even combine posts from different threads to make a new one. That could really be useful in the instruction or gear forums.

You could send people pdf's of threads or threads you create. What if also, you were able to somehow preserve the videos? or in printed versions have the link at least to look it up.
