Hi all, lurker here with first time post. My Hubby had the strangest gear malfunction last Friday and I am wondering if anyone has every experienced this before. His skis are Elan999; he has been skiing for 35 years, is an expert skier, skis everything, skis anywhere we can get to, skied about 30 days this season.
We had been skiing all week in Mammoth, CA with no problems - 2 spring days and 1 storm day with inches of light fluffy at top (peaks closed) and developing into Sierra Cement at bottom. We ended the third day exhausted from non stop skiing, but he had no gear issues. The fourth day was light, fluffy, and deep. This is where something went wrong.
He got off the gondola and couldn't push the ski through the deep flat area. The wax was 3 days old Tognar universal, the same as mine and son. We maneuver to the closest run (easy blue) to head for the bottom for a gear check. He can't make the ski go straight or turn right. It will only turn left! We ski down by him lifting the ski out of knee deep powder and forcing right turns.
The ski has a couple of good dings in the base and a couple of gouges in one edge. Could this minor damage have caused the ski to malfunction? The bindings are Marker Comp1400, ski boots are Head (forget which model) and packing out for sure. He picked the skis and bindings up new at a ski show this year. They are an older model but they have only been skied one season.
We will hit a shop next week but in the meantime, any ideas?
