How many new areas did you ski this season (2012 Edition)?

I was tallying up ski days and places recently and realized I think I set a personal best in new areas this season even with a 'bad' snow year in the east.

I had a list but lost it, I probably had 50 ish snow appearances (many were 3 hour ski patrol shifts after work) but I bagged 9 new areas!

Bagged 2 in New hampshire I had never skied before, Loon and Cannon.  3 in New York, Wyndham and a feeder ski school hill calleed Maple Ridge and White Face

and 4 in Tahoe, Squaw, Alpine Meadows, Mt Rose and Northstar.

How about you??  Hmmm?

I forgot one.....a nordic day at Bretton woods when Cannon was on wind hold for the day..so total is 10

Did you know you can go UP hill on cross country skis?  down hill (at least on a first ever day) was.....um....sphincter puckering power wedge hold on for dear life adventursome....how do you turn these suckers?  I even offered what is apparently an old tired joke when I truned in the skis at the end of the day......I said I skied all morning and never found the lift!  the eye roll I got made me slink away on legs that would not negotiate a 3 inch step.

Pretty good seaon, hi light was a wedding I did not know I was invited to .... not the bagging of 10 new areas .....

No new ones this year. Between being out of the country and bad timing with my planned trips I only got three ski days in at all. hopmad.gif

I had 3 at Killington alone!

I was out of the country the first half of the year and the season never really got going in PA. I got two days one weekend here, and went to NH but lost one day due to rain there and then ended up having to cancel my plans to attend the Eastern gathering.

Added Big Sky and Bridger to my lifetime list.  Definitely want to go back to Montana.  Plus explored more of the front side of Snowbird using a combo Alta/Bird ticket a couple of the warm days last week.

I moved out west for grad school after skiing for 17 years in New England, so I added quite a few.

11 or 12, depending on how you count

Eldora

Loveland

Copper

Telluride

Purgatory (Durango Mtn Resort)

Alta

Lookout Pass

Schweitzer

Winter Park

Steamboat (and Howelson Hill)

Beaver Creek

I've had about 85 days on snow this year. Aiming for 92 if the snow will cooperate (I really want to have > 1/4 year on snow)

should have had 5, indianhead (in UP) keystone, breck, vail, a basin but my school trip didn't go to vail and a basin cuz the snow sucked and I did 2 days each at breck and keystone instead.  Keystone was pretty lame, but they didn't have anything open other than icy or slushy groomers.  Breck was fun even though it was ice the whole time and imperial only opened for like 2 hours with nothing to ski down from anyways.  I would probably go back to breck again if the snow didn't suck and had all the good stuff open (nothing off of E chair or 6 chair either)

Added a few new ones to my list:

Vemdalsskalet, Bjornricke and Klovsjo (Sweden)

Zell am Ziller, Gerlos, Konigsleiten, Kaltenbach (Austria)

This season was all new to me-- since I moved to Munich, Germany.

Germany:

- Garmisch-Classic

- Zugspitze

Austria/Tyrol:

- Hochzillertal/Hochfügen AKA Kaltenbach

- Wilder Kaiser AKA SkiWelt

Finland:

- Yllas

So that's 5 new areas if you count one for each set of connected mountains-- and approaching 10 if you count separate mountains (or former separate areas that only recently were linked via lifts/tickets).

Good fun all around. Some epic powder days (1 meter fresh), some fun spring storm skiing. All after being off skis for about 5 years. I do miss the inbounds/out of bounds distinction from the States, and the lack of serious avy control within resort boundaries off-piste, but on the flip side there are far fewer people poaching the snow, and while I'm more cautious exploring a certain area's off-piste sections-- once I've found the hazards, I'm far more likely to get fresh lines in places that would be 100% skied out by 11am back in the U.S.... sometimes days after the latest snow!

Alpine Meadows

Mt Rose

Squaw wink.gif

Heavenly

Kirkwood

No new for me, the closest was Mt. Rose, which I hadn't skied since 96.

I'm experiencing a disconnect here.  Grad school, and you are looking to ski 92 days?!!  Unless grad school has changed a great deal since my day I can't imagine doing more than 4 or 5 days, tops.  I probably would have gone less, but I did my grad work during the summer.

I added one last week: Apex.

I added two to my list.  I spent a week at Mammoth in January and then another week at Big Sky to finish out my season.

I already can not wait for next season.

To be fair, most of these days were ~2-3 hours in the morning, followed by a full day (8-10 hrs) of work.

The season is long, and if you cut out everything besides sleep, school, and skiing, it's totally doable. You can even ask my advisor ;-)

Added Brian Head and Eagle Point Utah to places I've never skied. And I skied Sundance twice which is a place I hadn't skied in at least 15 years. Was all fun.

Since this was my first season skiing, it was easy to me to go ski "new" areas... I skied Bogus Basin (my local ski area), Brundage and Sun Valley. All in Idaho... hopefully will reach a couple more new areas next season...

Every year I try to add at least one new ski resort to my list.   I did very well this year and added 6.  Solitude, Brighton, Snowbasin and by skiing Big Sky, Moonlight, and Bridger Bowl, I even added a state.

Although I hit 14 or 15 different resorts, only 2 were new to me: Kirkwood and Diamond Peak.

XC, I hit 3 new ones: Craftsbury, Royal Gorge and Tahoe XC. I only got 5 days of XC this year. Bummer. But at least I finally got around to Craftsbury. It's a well known resort in the northeast, for very good reason.

I'm not surprise you got blank looks with your no lift joke. For XC skiers, lift is as forign as harringbone to alpine skiers.

Added 5 new ones to the list:

First time in New Hampshire-skied Cannon and Loon (I'd like to try them with more snow)

Second trip to Utah-twice at Alta, one each at Snowbird and Solitude (I'll be adding more UT resorts as my daughter and her family moved to SLC in January). Looks like I'll be spending vacation time in Utah, which isn't a bad thing!

0, but some of the areas were completely unrecognizable when compared to previous seasons.

I did visit, but didn`t ski one new area in the French Pyrenees.

No question added Snowbasin (thank you 4ster), Deer Valley, and Sundance.

Might as well be new The Canyons (taught there when it was Park West).

You be the judge on these Alta Snowbird (I self medicated a lot 40 years ago when I skied there last).

Leaving NE Utah this week and back to the North Left Coast.  Planing doing a day at White Pass on the way home.  When I get back to WA can I count my home mountain Crystal too?  The season pass is just like new.

MFA81 you bagged some good hills.  Keep it up.

Not new areas, since both belong to the same "consortium" but this year, skiing the Adamello ski area after many years, I explored the lower part of the carousel which, formally, until the early

2000s were distinct (not reachable skis on foot and not communicating w/ the main part) from Passo Tonale ski area itself:

-Ponte di Legno

-Temù

To my surprise, the groomed runs there are quite enjoyable and quite "technical", with nothing to envy wrt more "famous" marked runs around the Italina ski resort (as an example, the Grans Risa in Alta Badia)

Their disadvantage is the low altitude, though man made snow is of help.

No new ones, but I went to a couple I hadn't skied in 20 years or so.

Only one new one this year.

Blackjack in the upper peninsula of Michigan on the last day of the season. Look forward to going back next year when the snow is good. Decent vertical for the Midwest and steeper / longer than we are used to at Nordic Mountain. Good stuff!
