Kirkwood shut down Cornice Express today after the lift was derailed by an airbag.

At about 1:30 PM Saturday April 7th, the giant blue airbag was carried away from its mooring and sent towards nearby chairlifts.  The bag barely missed chair five but hit chair six, Cornice Express.  One chair reportedly went twirling from the impact with a woman and young child aboard.

Skiers were evacuated down chair six via rope rescue.

The evacuation took approximately two hours according to Kirkwood Mountain Resorts Facebook account of the incident.

No injuries were reported from the accident.

Man, that must have been a freaky thing to see from the lift.  On one hand it's here comes a great big thing that could spin our chair into a tizzy, on the other hand, here comes a big soft landing.

To their credit, Kirkwood did have Cornice Express back up and running less than 24 hours later.

Amazing story!

Imagine the poor guy planning to land on the airbag when it took off.  th_dunno-1[1].gif

Is this the chair with the skull and crossbones sign you have to ski under to get to the chair?

No, the skull and crossbones are typically on #10 Wagon Wheel "The Wall" which the other "black diamond" frontside chair that leads to the wall.

Chair six is newer and goes to the cornice, Sentinel Bowl, etc.

Chair 6 (Cornice) is next to Chair 5 and is visible from the webcam.  It is the first lift you see as you approach the main area near the lodge.
