Stowe Cardboard Sled Race

When the snow is almost gone and the lifts have stopped spinning, it's time for one last hurrah. Some mountains have a pond-skim, some do a dummy jump. We have a cardboard sled race. The sleds are constructed from cardboard, duct-tape and trash bags only. We do have a homologation committee to make sure everyone plays by the same rules. Here are some pictures from last year. This year's photos coming soon...

This year's pictures will have a lot less snow.

And the photo of your personal team is where?

yeah, I looked at the pictures before reading and thought damn, that's some great looking snow....    this years sleds will most likely need a mud & snow tire......

Those sleds are a lot of work! I'll just be taking pictures thank you very much!

Where can I get a copy of one of these sled pics? I was the builder and front rider of the 'Togaboggen' and just saw your great pic of us catching air last year. Also, if you have any from this year, I was the PBR semi, and would live any pics you've got. Thanks. Please email me any pics you have to sburnett@stowe.com and/or sburn360vt@yahoo.com. Thanks again

There was plenty of snow for the race. Unfortunately they screwed up the mound of snow they use to stop sleds. Usually it's a wall of snow, but this year they formed it into a ramp. One of the sleds went up and over the ramp, through the fences, and dropped a good 8 feet or so to flat. One person broke ribs, and two others got backboarded and sent to the hospital with possible back injuries. They called off the rest of the sled race after that and most of the sleds didn't get to go.

Edit: Just got word of the injuries: ‎one person with a bruised tailbone, one person with bruised and fractured ribs, two people with fractured backs and one person just generally in pain.

Gonna have to disagree with you on that. It's always a ramp, it just wasn't tall/long/soft enough this year. A wall isn't really what you want, I mean would you rather slam into a wall, or go up the ramp to slow down? When you are driving out in CO, do they have run-away truck walls on the side of the road?

Maybe not a wall, but it's always had some amount of vertical on it. The snowbank has never been like it was this year. And I just watched some videos from the past two years, and the snowbank wasn't a ramp at all, it was a wall of snow that was only about five feet high, although admittedly, the snow was a lot softer those years.

yikes! Sounds like a real disaster.  Unfornuately I doubt they will do the event again due to liability. Hope the people heal quick and well!

Did the sled go over the concrete wall?  I was there last year and watched some wild crashes.  No injuries and it was a lot of fun to watch, but that wall, as I recall, was not too far from the finish.  Hope everyone is ok.

Alright, I just got done editing some pictures not so many this year since not all of the sleds ran.

It's amazing what you can do with cardboard and duct tape.

This sled didn't get a chance to run, but it made quite an entrance - TOGA!

Rent and Repair must really like PBR they put a lot of effort into what was clearly the best sled, so I couldn't help taking a lot of pictures. I'm amazed that it made it to the bottom pretty much in one piece.

Oops, posted early... well, here's the race itself.

DSC_6098.jpg

This sled was called "Bad Idea" with good reason.

DSC_6102.jpg

Ski School desk is always a contender for the win - this year they went with a Beatles theme - that's a record they are sledding on.

DSC_6105.jpg

DSC_6108.jpg

"Snacktime at Cubs Daycare" - it moved at roughly the pace of a 3y.o. in ski boots.

DSC_6116.jpg

"No.1 Golf Pencil" - the tip broke on the way down. Don't they always?

DSC_6125.jpg

The "Jager-bomber" bombed. Again.

DSC_6131.jpg

Not sure who made this sled, but it exploded, and that always pleases the crowd.

DSC_6147.jpg

DSC_6151.jpg

"Cat in the Hat" - since it was barely moving, it was really easy to take pictures of it.

DSC_6157.jpg

DSC_6169.jpg

"Stowe Evolution Card" - this one was pretty fast.

DSC_6174.jpg

This is a Motorola Walkie-Talkie

DSC_6183.jpg

Now the PBR truck.

Holding back it's massive weight as they load the cargo.

DSC_6188.jpg

and they're off

DSC_6199.jpg

It held together all the way to the bottom.

DSC_6201.jpg

Then smashed into the wall and got wrapped in the B-net.

DSC_6202.jpg

Here's Team Selleck. Winning? Well they probably went the fastest, but I'm not sure they felt like they won.

No, nothing like that. That would have been bad. It didn't go anywhere near the concrete wall.

I'd like to think we can just build a better track next year. I'd be surprised if we don't have it again.

Bad Idea was my sled. We put it together super last minute.

It's actually way sturdier than it looks.

Still didn't work out too well though!

Almost!

Would not have wanted to be in the front seat!

It's funny how last minute they all are. The smell of wet paint in the lodge was pretty strong. Didn't want to touch them by mistake.

Tom Selleck's Mustache LOL!

That looks like way too much fun.  I've run anchor in a fire hose race before.  That was a wild ride.  The closest thing to that that I remember was we raced french fry dish boats down the little river of runoff running down the middle of the main trail at Buck Hill

Ha-Ha...

You gotta admit that would be a highly effective, sure-fire way to stop 'em!  biggrin.gif
