I like this contest ideaicon14.gif

I'm usually pretty careful in sketchy conditions, almost always going with rock skis if I have any doubts at all.  In spite of this...

I had one of those eek.gif "OH CRAP!" moments this season while skiing on my favorite all around skis. They are now on the third season, but bottoms were pristine until an ill fated choice to go hit a newly opened trail that looked fine from the chairlift.  There was a section where the upper and lower parts of the trail were joined by a small section obscured by trees from view.  I was chugging along thinking, coverage is thinner than it looked from above but skiable... until I came to the middle section, a 40 foot patch of nonono2.gifmostly brown rocky section.  I failed to see it in time to totally stop because the snow guns were blasting a whiteout just before it.  I tried my best to be super light footed, just like a swami scurries across hot coals hopmad.gifas I heard that awful grinding noise under my feet. I knew that moment that my beloved PE bases were now compromised.  Fortunately, there weren't any really deep gouges, most are lengthwise, and not even deep enough to hold p-tex.  But the ones that are there are long ones.  hissyfit.gif

Sorry, no photos.  I look forward to seeing the real carnage shots of damage resulting from peeps risking too much on natural snow that wasn't nearly deep enough or packed enough base to ensure safe passage over bounders, stumps, and tree roots.

I am in need of new boots for my wife. I have spent a lot of money on boots, footbeds, fitting, etc. for myself, but nothing on her for a number of years as she has old boots and can ski my pants off. She just got her Level II, good thing the Examiner didn't look at her pathetic boots.

I can only imagine what she could do if her boots weren't too big!

We are told Snowbowler will be removed from contention in this thread, not because he doesn't deserve but because he is a special case and will be treated accordingly. popcorn.gif

I posted a picture of my messed up gloves in a contest to win some leather glove finger covers. I don't think anyone else entered that contest. So who won the glove finger protectors? I posted in the thread asking this same question and there was no reply. Did anyone win or was the contest voided because I was the only entrant?

I have been using my old Dakine Heli-Pro backpack for the last 10+ years.  I love this backpack and it has held up to all the abuse I have given it.  I was riding up the Gad 2 lift at Snowbird and did not take off my backpack like I usually do. I had a water bottle in the outside mesh pocket.  The tip of the bottle pushed through the slats on the backrest of the chair as I was riding up.  As I went to get off, my backpack was stuck to the chair.  In my struggle to quickly free myself and get off the chair in time, I was disappointed to find out that I had torn a huge hole in the pocket.  I guess I learned my lesson to always take off my backpack but I still need to replace this old reliable, "it is time" as my wife told me.

I need new boots, according to my friends.  The lining is wearing through and they have THREE insoles in them.  They have 385 days on them, 387 when the season ends.  I hate buying new boots, so I just keep shoving in more insoles.  The last pair of boots I owned I used for 399 days, so clearly I won't get another season out of these things.

First day out on my new Bonafides.  The credit card charge hasnt even cleared my account yet.  3" of fresh snow fell on Mt Rose, and at that time of the season we were all ridiculously excited over even that much.  I was headed down a bump run, probably the 4th or 5th run total on these skis when I hear a *WHACK*.  I think I knew what happened immediately, but I waited until I got to the lift to check.  Yup.  Coreshot :(

This picture would be better if you showed it with the look on Lovebug's face as she shed a tiny tear for your core shot.

Of course, that was just before we headed back to Bruces so you could find he rock give it a good talking to!

Dear EpicSki,

I am a powder ski. My person loves to ski powder. Unfortunately for me, he also doesn't scout his lines very well. So many times I've been injured for his pleasure. He'll ski through trees and over rocks to get to his precious pow. Parts of me are scattered all over the mountain!

IMG_5300.JPG

And just look at the lousy repairs he does! My bases are gouged to the core and he just puts epoxy on the wounds and sometimes P-Tex. He has even broken my very core!

IMG_5298.JPG

Such abuse! I'm beat! At over twenty years old, I'm geriatric in 'ski years'. Please give my person the prize so he can afford to retire me. I can't take the beatings any more!

Regards,

A snowboarder hit me and cut my awesome  pants near the cuff while at the same time sheared a buckle off of my boot. Now the same pants are splitting in the usually watertight seams. My coat caught some branches and ripped the pass holder pocket apart and I glued it back, sort of.  At the same time as that I caught a branch that had broken off and hung itself between two trees hidden by the branches. My face got caught on that while also catching my goggles and it separated some of the foam from the lens frame. My face recovered better than my equipment after a time of fugliness.

Yeah , it's not easy being attached to me. Even my face agrees. Outside of the  herds of folks who have traveled the short cut across my skis in lessons they have held up very nicely despite the traffic and all has otherwise gone fairly well.

Alright here is my go at some desperately needed gift card for skis. I purchased some atomic snoops (2010/2011 season) and loved em. My second pair of skis ever and first pair I purchased for myself that weren't bought through a friend. To put it simply I live in the heart of the Midwest, the "crossroads" state for all that understand my reference so I must travel to the powder which is alittle expensive so I only get two decent trips to Colorado or Utah a year. So anyways as we all know this winter was a little lacking in the snow department in most places and in between trips I decided to go to a local hill to ski at in Midwest, Paoli Peaks, Indiana. Now I love skiing more than just about anything in this world we live in and knowing that conditions were less than optimal I decided to brave crappy snow conditions in Indiana out of all places to attemp to enjoy a few turns. I have these atomic snoops I bought new with bindings I spent over 700. I have babied these things waxed before trips and rewaxed after trips as well. These skis had only seen Colorado powder until this fateful day. First run I come down a rather icy path and come around a corner seeing an unavoidable bare patch of ground with roots sticking out of it. I somewho manage to stay on my skis as I glide over exposed topsoil and when I dont think it could get any worse a small camoflauged rock peaks out from just above the soil. Not only do I wipe out, not only is my one local ski day ruined but my left skis base is damaged far beyond repair a huge half inch gouge taken out 3/4 of the way down the length of my ski. Please help out a skier who truly loves to simply ski and the precarious scenarios I must deal with. Need help. Jealous of everybody on this forum! I am planning in moving to state with good skiing (Colorado/Washington) within the next 3 years but until then...

After ten successful seasons, seven included teaching children, the brakes on my beloved 918's gave out, forcing me to put them up in the rafters.

My heart is still broken.

Any Chance Bump still has his pants after the infamous Breck incident? IIRC, there are some great pictures of torn pants including exposed fleshy regions of the posterior? biggrin.gif

Utah, December 2011, three inches of snow had just fallen the night before. Four vacationers happy to be here, happy to be away from the crud and ice of the Northeast where the green of the grass still outreached the snow on the mountains. One of them on his new ski's he bought a week ago the widest, longest ski's he's bought for only the second time. With an additional 10 cm in length and 10 mm in width he was excited to take the next step in his development as a skier, the ski was the limit. "The snow was good, for us, we had been there a couple of days and tried two mountains I was just getting used to my new skis. I didn't know what was ahead for me, if I knew I wouldn't have choose that route" sigh. They followed each other off the trail to quickly connect to another just below as many have done that day. "I felt a hard scrape, just for a second. I felt it! You don't understand unless you've experienced it, it was awful!" The shuttle ride to the repair shop was quiet as the lone skier sat contemplating what had happened. "At least you're still alive" commented Gary the young repair technician. "Yeah." "You can pick it up tomorrow morning." "Thanks.

Asked about the Sierra Trading Post contest this skier's unselfishness shines. "It's been a rough season for my ski's, lots of exposed rocks, twigs and I seemed to have hit a lot of them but Utah was the worse. This season yielded two stone grinds 1 p-tex and a core shot repair. But I would see if there were new boots that fit my girlfriend first, she has older boots where the liner's insulation is shot and her feet are always cold no matter what type of socks and heating pad we've tried."

Three cheers for our leader, MastersRacer.  He got us to some really nice snow on some awesome parts of the mountain.  He even invited us into his House.  This is where I sacrificed my orange pants and a few drops of blood to Ullr.  In retrospect, I guess I should have sacrificed the other pant leg to Njord.

Thanks for the duct tape MR.........hey everybody, look at my butt!

ripfixit

Really fun runs were had in the E chair area, Mine Shaft being a personal fave.  We skied Mine Shaft right after lunch at the Peak 9 Restaurant.  MR told us we had to climb up the fairly short pitch behind said eatery.  Today this meant climbing against a stiff head wind.  I looked back down after the first few of us had finished the climb and couldn't see MR anywhere.  For a moment I imagined him going back in for dessert and saying to himself, "I can't believe that all fell for that old trick!"  Little did I know that this windy climb would be dwarfed in the next couple of hours.

One of the many stellar runs today was on Whale's Tail.  I thought the ride up Imperial was brutally cold and windy but the long, slow, climbing traverse was.... ...well, being pelted with big, hard snow pellets for a run yesterday was an intense experience but that traverse in sustained 50+ mph winds certainly topped it.

I don't have much experience with open bowl skiing but the runs today were just spectacular.  Skiing the steeps beside sunlit marbles of slough skittering along the slightly crusty surface of snow like an exaltation of larks was just incredible =)

We even managed to find some deserted groomers to leave our signatures on as we exited this fine mountain for the day.

Wow!

Day 2, Breckenridge:

MastersRacer was the guide du jour and what a joy to follow such a…… masterful skier.  After the meet up at peak seven we made our way over to peak nine or ten or twelve….. I don’t know, this place confuses me.  But I do remember Horseshoe Bowl since we got there just as it opened.  We did three or four laps of the T Bar, ruining fresh snow each time.  From there we did some of the horse runs and then a few off of E chair before heading in for lunch.  Then it was a trudge and a traverse over to Mineshaft which just skied beautifully.  Mosdef my fave run of the day until……

So, it was a tad windy that day.  I think our leader must have had a secret shortwave link to the Imperial Express because it was on wind hold most of the day but when we decided to go check it out the bull wheel was turning and they were loading chairs.  Now, I was thinking Spring when I dressed that morning and the wind was uncomfortably chilly.  A question was posed as to whether we wanted to brave the wind on the Imperial and I was really close to voicing a negative  opinion.  Instead I kept my mouth closed and assumed the fetal position on the chair.  Oh, did I mention that earlier in the day a couple of trees had conspired to tear my pants to shreds and half my naked ass was hanging out?

2011-04-09 2011-04-09 001 001.JPG

It's just a flesh wound.  Have at you!

Once off the lift, it was decided that our destination was Whale’s Tail.  Now, I’ve skied WT before but am far from familiar enough to know the way or what the way entailed but I was game to follow and follow I did….. and followed, and followed and followed.  This was a traverse head on into a 50-60mph wind.  At some points the wind carried so much snow that if you opened your mouth it would fill with snow at an alarming rate.  As the traverse continued I seriously questioned the wisdom of this decision.  There were a bunch of times that the whiteout cleared enough to get a glimpse of what was below and I thought, ‘why aren’t we dropping in here?’

Finally we got to our destination and waited to be sure the whole group was intact.  After MR shouted some instructions that I struggled to hear just a few feet from him, he dropped in.  MeFree30 followed on his heels and I couldn’t help but to succumb to the forces of gravity.  I think it was the voice of JohnL that quickly faded from me, “ONE AT A TIME from now on!”  I suppose he was right and it was a risky proposition for me to follow two such good skiers so closely, but the traverse had been so harrowing, I was so cold and the skiing was so sublime that I just had to go.  The three of us danced with the mountain.  There was less than a foot of blown in snow and it was not light and fluffy, in fact it had a bit of a crust, but on this day, on those skis (Bluehouse Maestros) it was as welcoming and forgiving and grandma’s open arms.  It was sheer bliss.  As Stefano de Benedetti might have said, “on thees run I felt like a leetle bit of a super man.”

Grizzled veterans please forgive me, but for this relative newb, that traverse and run was the most enthralling experience I’ve had on skis.

One other memory from this day comes to mind.  Very near the end of the day we came to a sunny bump run with trees on the side.  MR, Lady Salina and King Grump headed for the trees but I was feeling a bit tree shy.  I quietly explained this to JohnL and then continued at the top of my lungs, “besides, these bumps look SAWEEEEEET!”  as I charged downward expecting to blast through soft crud.  Perhaps I should have taken note that ten out of the twelve peeps on that run were not on their feet.  The sun had densified and the wind had refrozen that snow.  Those bumps were indeed, not sweet!  We all laughed at that more than once.

I am down to one old jacket and one old pair of snow pants, they are faded and frayed and worst of all both are black. It is a very bad look and it is topped off with a black helmut. Almost forgot, my skis are black. A green jacket and yellow pants would be way cool!

My clothes are disintegrating after years of use in the sun. My Patagonia outlet puff ball jacket has been through it. Landed hard on my back on some hard-pack (don't do that) a few years back and tore the fabric:

Patagonia Puff Ball - Back to Hard-Pack

Then put a hole in the front with grinder sparks (not like carhart pants) smoothing the bumps off our rail:

Patagonia Puff Ball - Back to Hard-Pack

Duct Tape just isn't cutting it anymore. Help a guy out!

I see your jacket is patagonia.  They are and awesome company.  Their policy for warranty stuff is, "send it back."  A handwritten note is always appreciated.  They have fully repaired 15-20 year old gear for free.

It wouldn't let me edit my old post for some reason. Sorry for double posting

This season was a very catastrophic one for my gear. Second day out on my new (to me) Salomon shoguns and I decide to ski vail pass with some friends. We had a great day leading up about 2:30. I decided to drop a rock adn as these skis were bought used they still had the crappy rental bindings on them. I drop the rock land slightly back seat and off pops my left ski... never to be found again. We looked for almost 2 hours and never found the ski. I was forced to ride back on the snow mobile carrying one ski frown.gif

Next in line was my High Societies. They are a faithful ski I have had for four seasons and already had one traumatic event where the binding blew off of one, landing a jump. Well we were having a great park day when I landed a simple 360 and stopped to wait for my friends to jump. One of them crashes and loses some gear so I skate over to pick it up but have on odd feeling in one of my skis. I look down to see that one of them had snap clean in half. 2 ski fatalities so far.

430735_1876417426544_1124461061_32188120_1536668424_n.jpg

Next weekend I am at winter park for a ski cross race I am riding a pair of atomic sx7 and we finish racing so I head over to the park to get a little jump practice in. After finishing up I get on the lift and look down to see I had busted off the end cap on my left ski. 3 casualties with 2 fatalities now.

Not to longer after I head to USCSA Nationals and having no complete pairs of freestyle/free ride skis I am forced to borrow a pair skis from my brother. Nationals start Monday and the week goes well until the slope style competition Friday. During my first run I land off the second jump where yet another pair of skis is added to the count.  The heel piece on the binding breaks and while I attempt to fix it the brake fails to deploy and the ski runs into the pond at the bottom of the course. Not being my ski I am forced to go swimming for it. That water was freaking cold!

swimming.png

swimming for the ski

rescued.png

Rescued ski!

I manage to fix the binding well enough to compete in the pipe event where the ski lasts just long enough for me to complete my runs before breaking once and for all bringing the toll to 4 casualties with 3 pairs done for.

unfortunately the video of me swimming for my ski wouldn't upload so I was forced to use screen shots.

Compelling but not really sad. Yeah the water was cold but you got the ski back.  Yeah, you broke some skis dropping too early in the season but you got more. See snow's story; that's the poster child of this competition. biggrin.gif
