Sure would be. If they could put Marco Andretti in the Ferrari I could cheer for a red car again. He couldn't be worse than Massa, could he?

Geez, I dunno.... M. Andretti in an F1 car didn't work out so well last time.  Does F1 greatness skip generations?

Grandpa did OK, and that McLaren was handful. Anyway, Marco is not going to F1. But Ferrari should put an American in their car. We buy more of them than anybody else.

I think Alexander Rossi is the closest we have right now. Unfortunately he's signed up with Caterham (as a practice driver), but that's closer than not being signed up with anyone I guess. Don't know much about him other than he came in fourth in the GP3 championship in 2010 as an 18-year-old (better than Jean-Eric Vergne fwiw).

Rain in Monaco. Love it!

Yeah - sweet.  What's already a procession after the first turn is a slower procession...

I respect Monaco for its history, but it's been a while since it's been an exciting race.

Did you watch last year? The safety car ruined it, but it was a nail-biter up until that.

Vettel winning again?

In all honesty, I'm confident I watched it, but just don't remember any of it.  I wake up for Asian and Australian races, never mind the European portion of the schedule.  I guess it's just not as memorable as Kimi Raikkonen slamming  into the back Adrian Sutil a few years ago.

Button was coming up on Vettel (his tires were shot) and Alonso fast. Looked like he might overtake them both for the win. Then Perez wrecked, Red Flag and they allowed everyone to put new tires on while they were stopped. Bummer.

Could you imagine if Schumi was P1 to start tomorrow???  Great drive, too bad for the whoopsie last race...

Taku!!!?!!!?

Dug the race today though all my faves seemed to go backward.

Again, after watching some Indy coverage I sure do appreciate our commentators, their comments are often brilliant but that three shot before the race got under way was a tad bit comical.... Steve doing his best impression of a jovial thatched roof, David demoing the palsy and Bob saying, "Hey look, I'm the ordinary one of the group!"

Yeah, Indy was a hoot.  What's up with all the cars looking alike?

Messed up my DVRing.... recorded the pre-race but missed the first bit of the race coverage.  Really wanted to see what they'd to with Back Home Again in Indiana this year.  Anybody see what they did?

It was good to see Rubens drive a steady race to a top ten finish.  I was really pulling for Marco and Taku.  What cool coverage to see Marco pounding his wheel when he realized that they'd given the race away... and oh, man.... Taku.!?!?  You had it in your pocket, dude!!!  Just had to wait a couple more corners.

When's the next race?

They seem to be getting weirder looking over time. I think their commentary is great though -- like it a lot better than the BBC broadcasts I've occasionally seen. It's cool that they don't act like there's one particular driver we're all supposed to care about.

At least Indy chose a spec body that looks good (and that seems to stand up to a lot of punishment)! Too bad about all the ovals... :)

Hi bump,

Indy always surprises, disappoints and entertains.  This was a great race.

Spec car racing has destroyed the sport IMO.  I long for a return to V8's 6's and 4's on the track at the same time in 3 or 4 different chassis.  Same with Nascar.   They say parity is good for the sport but the true fans disagree. The Menard Buicks were faster than the Chevys but seldom finished,  that's what I hope to see again.  The new car is safer, that was needed, it also drives better and races better...but is boring.

Gomer Pyle was not feeling well so they played a video of him singing, nice touch.

Rubens did fantastic.  He was quoted as saying Indy is more difficult than anything F1 does.

I was pulling for Marco and Taku also.  I guess someone forgot to tell Taku not to Hildebrand the last lap.

Next race Bell Isle http://www.indycar.com/en/Schedule in a week.

When I owned a Subway sandwich shop we often catered Indycar testing back in the early-mid 90's at the old airport in Big Spring, Tx.  Was able to get up close to the drivers, cars and crews.  It was nice to walk outside my house and hear indycars in the winter.

I agree. One of my favorite Indys was the year when Penske lapped the field with the pushrod Ilmor/Benz engines. They looked at the rule book and built something different. That's what you are supposed to do!

epic,

I was there that year.  That engine was incredible. 1000+ HP.  The good old days for sure.

The pace car had more horsepower than the race cars this year, and will run for 100,000+ miles before a rebuild.  Sad. Lotus...???

http://articles.latimes.com/1994-05-25/sports/sp-62048_1_indy-car-engine

...Penske, known for seeking the "unfair advantage" since his early days with engineer-driver Mark Donohue, decided to go one step farther. He would have Ilmor design and build a push-rod engine within USAC regulations for the Indy 500 only...

Cool vid.  That fuel tubing looks like something you'd find in the Kmart plumbing department.

After watching taht I was thinking how I feel for anyone that drops a small wrench while working on taht car. You'd have to take the whole thing apart to get it out.

Funny, I watched auto racing of all kinds especially F1, when I lived in Michigan.  Now I rarely peek to see who's winning and who's not.

I guess my new scenery will do that to a girl.

Now that NBC bought the F1 rights for the US, I'm hoping somehow they pull the commentating team over from Fox/Speed. I guess NBC's IndyCar guys are fine enough, but it seems kind of wrong to have guys with southern accents talking about all the Euro-drivers and explaining to the audience what a right-hand turn is. Plus the Speed guys (Hobbs & Matchett especially) brought kind of a joy to their telecasts that would be hard to replicate.

Hey, thanks for the thread revival, outlier.

I'd sure welcome the news that the old team has been retained but Bob Varsha probably has a pretty tight contract w/Speed.  Although, it sounds like whatever replaces Speed will be quite different.  Maybe they'll let him do a bit of moonlighting.

I had to chuckle when the team was addressing the news that Speed wouldn't be doing the telecasts next year.  Bob went on about how special it had been and how he would miss it, Steve was almost blubbery about what an honor it has been, what a special time that he'll always remember.  Then David recalls the first F1 race he called was on CBS, then he went to ABC then Speedvision then Speed Channel then Speed....Sounded to me like he was saying, 'y'all can get all emotional, I'm gettin' another job!'

So yeah, a new era on the horizon.  I see that P1 and P3 will be added to the telecasts, so that's good news.  Speculation is that they'll use the same formula of one on site reporter (I'd love to see the return of Peter Windsor) and the rest of the team watching the official feed.  I'm not sure who that services but it always seems like cheating to me.  I read that the whole team will be on site for certain races though.  That's a step up IMO.

Bernie put an emphasis on 'unprecidented marketing' in the US and that leaves me a bit uneasy.  I guess I'd have to say that I've been pretty happy with how things have been since Speed went to HD.  I'd rather press on with no changes but that seems to be a rare option most of the time.  Newer is better, many seem to think.  Let's hope it holds true this time.

I hope it'll be good on NBC. I liked when it was on ESPN. I remember one GP of Japan where they went with just in-car for what seemed like 10 consecutive laps of a battle between Berger and Mansell (I think that's who it was). Too bad Bernie-vision never happened where you could pick which cameras to watch.

Didn't IndyCar actually do that for a while with their live online broadcasts? I always meant to try it out, but they didn't accommodate time-shifting (i.e., watching the race later in the day in user-controlled multi-camera mode).

No idea - I liked CART, but IndyCar/IRL has never done it for me.

Vettel finishing on the podium didn't seem that surprising to me. If Hamilton had stayed in the race, Vettel would have finished fourth, which would have been even less surprising, but still.

Really enjoyed the Abu Dhabi race!  Kimi is certainly one of my faves so I was real happy to see him celebrate on the top step.  Some pretty entertaining stuff came out of his mouth during the race but I cracked up for the last time when Coulthard asked him what he was feeling after winning again in F1.  "Nothing, really."  Ha!  I think what he was really thinking was more along the lines of, "I finally win after all this time as you serve me......sparkling fruit juice?!?!?!"

Anyone else going down to Austin this week?  Still got my fingers crossed that Alonso can pull something out.  IMHO he is still the best natural driver out there
