Snowy Luau Weekend, Timberline, WV, Mar 17&18, 2012

I attended the Snowy Luau Weekend at Timberline ski area in Canaan Valley, WV, on March 17 and 18, 2012.  Conditions were somewhat sketchy and soft with temps in the 60s, but in this wacky winter any spring skiing is good spring skiing.  I stayed in one of the Canaan Valley Resort cabins with a small group of friends on a buy one night, get a second night free special deal.  We skied Saturday (mostly sunny) and Sunday (partly cloudy with rain before dawn and sprinkles after noon).  They had four trails open from the top with 1000 feet of vertical;  one green, two good blues, and one black diamond bump run.  It was just enough variety to be fun and everyone was in a party mood.  What more could you ask for:  spring skiing, good people, Snowy Luau festivities, and St. Paddy’s Day all wrapped up in one!

I'm going to send out a blast of pictures as a way to share them with folks I made turns with this weekend.

Me and SCWVA (on right).  SCWVA is a ripper and gets my vote as ski dad of the year.  He and wife bring five young kids to the mtn when they go skiing and they all get on the hill together for good family times.

Saturday night they lit a huge bonfire accompanied by Hawaiian drummers and music as a prelude to fireworks and a torch light (lava) parade down the mountain.

Trust me, this is a fireworks show off the ~4300' summit of the mtn with about 75-100 skiers/snowboarders holding torches and coming down the mtn under the display

THAT'S ALL FOLKS.

Great pix and write-up Jim, as always.

Vince has taken it to the next level this year, and is totally on his skis in the bumps. Pretty impressive.

It's been great to be back on skis and to feel gravity again. But man, I need to get back in shape; not used to sitting around for months at a time.

Nice, Jim.  I'm going to send the link to the folks at t-line.  I'm sure they will enjoy as well. See you next season!

Thanks for the compliments on my skiing and posting the great pics Jim.  Also thanks for letting my wife and I share the cabin with you, Cathy and Morgan for the weekend.

Nice pics Jim. Thanks for posting.

Who would have thought that skiing slushy slopes, most of which had a grassy entrance, could be so much fun?

Here are a couple pics that I took:

The guy with a crazy straw hat (Jamesj), one with a grass skirt (Morgan), and the dude with a Snowbird t-shirt (SCWVA). What a trio!

Hey great pictures James, David.

James didn't the picture of the dirt chicken  wink.gif come out?

Amazing conditions considering the fact that winter in the mid-atlantic was cancelled this year.

It look like Saturday's weather turned out to be pretty good. I'm sure the forecast of showers had a lot to do with my family's decision to leave Friday. I'm sorry I now have to wait until next season to ski with all of you again. Thanks for the photos Jim. Nice to see the Mid-Atlantic posse riding high.

John, nice sharing three days at the start of that week. It look like that rude introduction to that tree in Pearly Glades didn't slow you down at all. With regards to VinceK's skiing, I knew when I skied with him late last year and at the T-line gathering that I will be forever in his wake. Youth is served, nice skiing Vince. Ski instructing has paid off for you and your improvement will pay of for your clients as well.

Maybe we'll see you all again at John's pre-season party next fall.
