Retro Day

Thread Starter

hi all, my friends and I are trying to have a retro day at the mountain complete with skis and clothing all from around 1980

Do you guys have any recommendations for for a set of skis? any old time  favorites, or popular skis that I would have an easy time finding? thanks!

I have done a few retro days.  I had my old equipment, so I did not have any issues.

If you need to look for gear, network with your buddies.  If they don't have something, they may know someone who does.  Also check eBay.  There are plenty of dated skis there.

Here are skis to look for:

Olin Mark IV

Kastle National Team race skis (RX12, RX15)

Any Rossignol race ski (ST, SM, FP, 4S, 3G)

Any K2 Comp Ski (710, 810, 712, 812, VO Slalom)

K2 5500

Head Yahoo

Any Volkl race ski preferably something with the tiger stripes.

Any Blizzard Thermo race skis.

Dynastar race skis with the Barney Hart dampener

Pretty much any race ski from that era.

I am sure that others will have some suggestions.

Have fun with it.

Dennis

Edit:  Most likely the shops won't be able to work on the bindings.  So make sure what size boot was in the binding before you make the call, or just replace them.

Did people still ski 200+ length skis back then? When did skis start gett
ing shorter?

Until I started using shaped skis, my daily driver was a 205 giant slalom race ski.  It was common for men to use 200 cm or longer skis.  Women used 185 cm skis.

I got my first shaped ski in the 1996-1997 season.  It was an Elan SCX RP.

My first pair <205 were 190 Volkl Snowrangers in the mid 90's.

I really like the Dynastar course HP or SL gold  or white withrt he Red "chicken Hearts"  on the tips.  they really ski nicely.  Check out the More Retro Memories thread.

I have heard good things about the K2 comp series (610 710 810 etc) but what about the TR Comp?

Sure why not?  During that era, the TRC and the KVC were K2's GS and SL skis.  I believe that era was the early 90s.

Dude,

Don't overthink this.  It's just a retro day.  You are asking the forum of skis from over 20 years ago.

Never heard of the VO Comp or the VO KVR.  I'm guessing both were race skis from back in the day.  I'm guessing the VO KVR is a slalom race ski.

VO Slalom was a slalom race ski.

VO Unlimited was an all mountain ski.

I got to ask.  Have you ever skied on an old school straight ski?

If you go to a thrift store of swap shop you should be able to find everything you need and at a good price.  Just make sure the bindings on any skis are going to be safe to ski on.

Be very careful.

Move this question about the difference between the K2 VO's over to the More Retro Memories thread,  there are folks there who can answer it.  I can't because I never really liked K2 so I never paid much attention to the diffenced in their skis.
